Detailing

WCF

Help Support WCF:

I detail all sides, quite a few custys have commented on how they like how Im thorough. I might try leaving bottom edge and see how I get on, as its a pain. "A pain in the glass". I will try an dog ear my channels. or buy one of these, unger has dog eared this squeegee

I use unger fine weave microfibres for cleaning small panes, but have noticed they are leaving fibres, but think the reason is that I wash all my cloth scrims with my sill microfibres which leave alot of fibres, so think they are contaminating my fineweaves, glass polishing scrims:thumbsdown:.

Thanks for that rugbywolfI'm going to give it a try I've seen a lot of stuff on youtube and people talking about it on here aswell

I'm suprised one of the manufacturers doesn't have one already cut on the market as it seems very popular thing to do and is all the rage
I made this short video about two years ago, and although it is a bit raw, you can see that you can get a good clean and edge without detailing.

I often think that the level of detailing is down to the preference of the cleaner. For example, I've watched video's on dog earing a few times where after squeegee'ing, the guy shows you round the window and says something like 'you see, no soap on the glass, no detailing required' and I've scratched my head and screamed at the screen 'it's all around the frame, surely you're not gonna leave it like that therefore, you need to detail'.

Detailing is removing excess water from the window not just the glass. Personally, I squeegee, wipe round the frame ensuring I'm making contact with the glass with my scrim and then wipe the sill over with the same cloth. Then I will often pull out my micro and wipe once more around the glass to remove any smears. It takes a little longer my way but my windows are always smear free and I pride myself on my corners(pane).

I really think a lot of it's down to the cleaner. My own window cleaner(yes I have one), uses only a scrim to detail and I often see the odd smear after. Yes, I look and perhaps the avergae customer doesn't so again, I think it all depends on how well you wanna do the job/how much you're charging. Another thing, I will heavy detail a lounge window where sometimes I won't detail at all if it's a top bathroom window with frosted glass. I really don't think a good wc should even try, to clean without detailing myself but, that's just me.

Mart.

i would use more soap / water than you do

what rubber do you use @rugbywolf ?

just to add....thanks mrtaytay...i was reading your post about the fish scale but i didnt believe it...thanks to your link my 5 arrived yesterday and i couldnt wait to go and try them on his lordships conny over the road....they really really are the best.../emoticons/biggrin.png always gonna be in my kit from now on for sure...

one thing with using scrim is the fine fibres that can get left behind...especially if you notice a tiny spot or two like me and have to get them off with the applicator end scrubber and then i scrim it off but now always those cloths i couldnt believe no mess ...

If you look closely, you will see that the wash pad does not put water all over the frame. The pad is only half an inch longer than pad. So no need to wipe the frame. And to answer norm; the whole point is to restrict the amount of water on the glass. It is too much water that causes runs, and therefore the need to wipe the frame/glass. It is an efficient and effective system, and I've been working this way for about four years. I say the vid is raw, because the way I do it now is more refined, and also, I use a Wagtail as well sometimes.

You must use a lot of cloths if you're detailing and wiping the sill with the same cloth? Why not detail with a dry cloth and use another for sills only?

Hi norm. I use Unger hard rubbers on that one in the video, that's my main blade. On other squeegees I use mostly Pulex. One of the things with this system is that I have had to work out is how to get as much soap in the water to get slidability, but not to get soap suds, which get in the way. I managed to do that, but I'm not telling just at the moment!!

Yea, sorry Rugby, I wasn't referring to your video, I was replying to the general thread about detailing and the level required. I think I decided to add my post after re-reading page one and my post just fell under yours. Your video shows a different technique altogether and is very useful. By the way, noticing the wolf in your name....are you a Wolves fan ?

Tuffers, you're right, I do get through some scrims. Once soaked, I throw it over my jerry can to dry and grab another...they usually dry in about 30 minutes in this weather but the winter months can be abit annoying and perhaps I should really look at getting another pouch for a wet sill cloth....it may well save me some time. Cheers.

er...i dont think mine laughs too much...the line is very long...but its great to have a bin bag of crisp clean old scrims...although...i not so sure i need them for detailing any more....and most of them are past thier use by date...but bundled together....may be my new sill cloths..cant wait to go to work and play with your magic cloths again:D
