Pickingpaul

ive never employed anyone to get me customers but i think its a good idea for those who are just that little bit too nervous anxious or i experienced, if u have tried and failed to knock on enough doors to get any customers, a mental block and u just cant do it then yes im sure an experienced trust worthy company could be employed to get your balls rolling

But for those who have/do/want to try canvassing i think we should help each other out here as we will all have different ideas of what works and a combined knowledge of our experiences will hopefully help us all out to hone these skills.

Please add anything, tiny details, big issues, over coming problems and hurdles, u can often just get stuck and its as thoug your efforts are on pause and u need to snap out of it and carry on.

These are some tips i would say based onLy on my own experiences, feel free to disagree with me and present your logic as i want to also improve, i do not know it all

1. Appearence, look the part, wear your belt and tools as if u have just been cleaning a house. This is so immediately where they see you they can see you are a window cleaner which will actually set them at ease as these days u get a lot of people knocking for various rwasons. I wear an actual uniform. I have a little squeegee my name and phone number printed on the front of my t shirts and tops and in bold "window cleaner" on the back, this actually makes u look pro to a degree. I wear work style trousers and boots.

All this appearence helps when u get timid people look at you through the window, nets or porch door, u dont actually have to speak before they know what you want, you can gesture to your applicator and mime a cleaning motion and people understand, so they either shake their head or look exsisted and come rushing to the door.

Always smile /emoticons/smile.png

2. Finding the customers.

look on google maps at your local area and or drive around, find houses you like the look of, within your comfort zone and think, yeah i would like to clean that for £10 etc.

In the mid morning time, 10:30 onwards, walk up to every house and look at the windows, are they very clean? Are they dirty? Are they filthy? If they are very clean jog on, dont waste yours and their time asking if they want a window cleaner as the odds are they have one or they do it themselves. This saves u loads of time.

If they are dirty or filthy then ring the bell and smile, they dont have a window cleaner my friend, so you have a chance at being their new window cleaner.

When they answer the door smile and simple say "hello, would you like a window cleaner?" And smile. Now i know you can think of many better things to say more complex etc ut you may find you get confused and stumble over your rehursed pitch like they do on dragons den. You are coming straight to the point "hello/hi, do you want a window cleaner?" No bullsh)t, no confussion, you look like a window cleaner because you are one and they have one of two answers for your question, either "yes" or "no" or something similar.

If they say no, jog on, its good practice still and not a waste of time.

If they say yes then great, you then need to go through several details

A. Can you reach all said windows, make it absolutely clear if u cant reach any for whatever reason there is.

B. How often they want a clean, monthly which is generally 4 weekly is this price £10 example, or 8 weekly £12/14 example.

C. Payment, i almost always get cash and the odd cheque but bank transfer is good also and the way of the future no doubt. Ask if they are normally in? If its the day time the odds are they are and these make for great customers, always being in and paying, retired people or some people on benefits or house wifes or people that work from home etc etc etc. the other type is people who are al ost always going to be at work. Now the best thing to do is take their number and suggest that you textor ring the day before and that they leave the money in a spot you both agree on, ie, under a plant pot, in the shed, seletaped to the kitchen window. Some people will click with this and they will leave it every single time without fail, others will take a few months to remember, these are the sort of people who forget to put the rubbish out  but u wont know u til u trial the. For a few months, ocassionally forgetting or being away is fine in my book. Alternately you have to call back for money, collecting, can be annoying can but lovely going out for an hour at 6pm and getting £100+

D get their name whether or not u are planning to text them or not, when u turn up and say "hello Sandra, how are you" it developes a personal friendship or aquantence which people like, people like to have their names remembered, but when you say, my name is paul, they dont always reply with " im sandra" so u should just ask and write it down as u will forget.

So when u get this new customer betweek 10:30/4:00 you of course clean them there and then and see you in four weeks.

DIRTY LIST

This is the important part of my methodology.

When u have spotted dirty windows and nobody is in you then write down this house number. This is your dirty list, and you build up a large list of dirty houses thoughout the day time, minimizing annoying anyone who already has a window cleaner. You dont want to be told 200 times sorry i already have one, trust me. So pin pointing dirty houses u get people who either want a window cleaner or they just dont want one, simple, you have removed all the "ive already got one" brigade.

So by 4pm or when u are knackered u have a lovely dirty list of houses dont you? Now some of those poeple will have been out getting pension shopping bowling etc but majority will have been at work, most people get back from work around 6 if they finish around 5.

So you have a golden time here, 5-6:30 you retrace your route and reknock on all the dirty houses using the same line "hello, would you like a window cleaner?" Smile. A quick yes or no tell you the answer. If yes, be quick but not rushed, no time for a cup of tea or ideal chit chat now, cut to the chase! What windows they want (some just have fronts) price, 4/8weekly. I never say 8 weekly by the way, they have to suggest it or i will get the distinct impression that they think 4 weeks is too often after several cleans and then i suggest it.

You can get 10 customers at this prime time with a nice dirty list. All these houses you will clean tomorrow, i suggest a max of 6 houses as they are dirty and will take longer and u want a very good first impression. If u start getting 7+ say you will be round the day after tomorrow weather permitting but will be earlier in the week in the future.

So this plan should see you well /emoticons/smile.png

Now a good customer or bad customer is hard to know at the early stage, give them chanses, but beaware that if u get 10 customers that may well dwindlw down to 6 over a few months, but also know that you will at some point pick up new ones either based on their recomendation or people seeing you working and asking you.

Never knocking on what i called clean windows isnot an absolute truth of course, sometimes u will see perfectly clean windows on a house and they actually want a window cleaner but these are far and few between and they are the sort that will ask u when they see u in the road.

Bad payers, weed them out, once u get paid, use ur own judgment, give them a chance or two if u like but u dont want a round full of people messing u about for money all the time, ocassionally is acceptable for me once i know they dont mind paying double here and there the next time i come.

Good advice paul

I don't have a fancy script either

"Do you need a window cleaner" job done

agreed get straight to the point and make sure you have a nice smile, i still knock houses with clean windows you never know the diy window cleaner may want your services, make a bit of a joke with the customer "why clean your own windows when you can spend time on the more important things in life:)"

I also wear my belt with tools to look the part and have my polo shirts with mr squeegee embroidered on the front and phone number printed on the back with window cleaner written above it

Hi There People.

You will notice that each time you click on this or pretty much any page on here you get Mark Nicholsons ad right at the top (Mister Whizz Biz)or bottom. I used him last year and although I picked up some tips which were worthwhile I should steer clear if I were to do it again. He's a really nice bloke but there are a few issues. 1) He says he doesn't canvass places he's already canvassed for other people-Not true-As we went round an area he said "This place has always been difficult to canvass." He'd done it a few years before for somebody else. 2) He tries to get the fronts only at first-This is not actually as bad as I 1st thought. You might get the fronts for a £10 house for £6-He actually suggests to "Just try us on the fronts and have the backs done on say special occasions." The good thing about it is a few will eventually ask you to do the backs too and if they are similar you can simply double up the price and people don't really mind. This hasn't happened often.

3) The VERY bad part is he doesn't even look at the house properly. I am a traditional cleaner so it is important to be able to put my ladders up to get to top windows. He knocked a door and apparently got the job. I couldn't pitch the ladder yet it was the window right next to where he had stood to canvass it. He also did not look around the backs or the sides. He got a house for me at which an apparently really nice looking lady lived at. It was twice the width of a normal 2 up 2 down house. The front was really a £10 job. He quoted £15 for the whole house. I did the fronts and my lad carried on an went around the back. As I went around the side and then the back I realised that I'd seen greenhouses with far less glass in them at garden centres!!!!! I abandoned the property saying to my lad that even if we started on the backs just having done the fronts and side it still wasn't worth the £15 quoted just for the rest of it and we would regret it every time we did it. I texted her back saying that it was really a £30 job not a £15 one. She wouldn't have it (neither would I once I'd been told £15) and I lost the job. Funnily enough I put a few cards in close by and got a call. The house has been done ever since for £30 and is identical.

4) He promises the world to try and get a sale. Now I don't mind doing the glass, frames and sills. Mark also says that we do the doors/doorframes and surround and we'll even do your step for you!" It's actually irrelevant whether or not they actually have a step or not. When I canvass for myself I would charge extra on a 1st clean in order to get it all up together but he works on results as he says he'll get about £600-£800 of work for a £1200 fee. You end up fulfilling HIS promises at his prices and it is very wearing turning up and cleaning a house for £6 and it takes 40 minutes because of how many years grime you are cleaning off. Think about that! You end up spending a whole day doing around £60 of work.

5) This last bit was my own fault and not Marks- He has a strict method of what to do regards texts the day before but is often a bit careless in taking down names and numbers. You know an address and he's canvassed it but the text is pinged back to you. You are in the area and think-well he did canvass the house but they aren't in and the number doesn't work. I did this a couple of times. It turns out they had given a false number because they were simply trying to get rid of him or he took the number down wrong. I did the house any way and never got paid for my hours work!! I know he's a bit careless as I have kept a few custys he got me and their details were also wrong.

I could have got Mark to come back and make up the amount of work he should have got me but put simply I didn't want him anywhere near my round. The advantage is that when you do the rubbish ones he gets for you other people ask you. I hope this helps. Mark

I think point two is a great idea...just try us on the fronts...no hassle and later they are bound to want the backs and you can simply double great idea..../emoticons/biggrin.png

Do you have any fronts only dave??

I have none out of all my work

The awkward access through the house jobbies i use my 6ft triples and arrange for when they will be in..that's why i do some weekend work

Excellent advice I shall definitely be canvassing my round what I bought and it seems the guy I bought it off seemed to show no enthusiasm or couldn't be botherd thanks for the sound advice I shall keep you posted on my future progress.

Very informative as regards whizz bizz, i have booked him for this year so ill be taking my chances.

I used another well known canvasser in november and i agree to an extent there were a few "**** jobs" handed over like need to be in for access types or i need to ask my wife etc but on the flip side some well priced jobs and some nice customers so its a mixed bag. out of the work i was left with i have lost 200 quids worth thats needs replacing, now im not saying anymore because as long as the work is replaced in the end i cant really complain, afterall customers are fickle. Yes the canvasser could get better work but i suppose he wants to do what us cleaners do at the end of the day earn his money and get home. And i didnt have the nerve to do it myself so i guess its something you have to put up with.

I think the saying "if tha wants it doing reet do it tha sen" springs to mind,

That said i will still pay canvassers along with doing what i can myself as i still think the initial first couple of cleans and drop offs you do eventually get back over the first few cleans and in the long run will be worth it.

I think of it like this, if i paid £1200 a year to a canvasser for say 500 quids worth of monthly work and i did this every year for 5 years i would have.

year 1 £500 x 12 = 6000

year 2 1000 x 12 = 12000

year 3 1500 x 12 = 18000

year 4 2000 x 12 = 24000

year 5 2500 x 12 = 30000

thats £90000 in turnover for an outlay of £6000 in 5 years, even with a 50% drop off rate that would still be a huge return on investment. Your only other investment would be some hard graft getting thru the first cleans and dealing with drop offs and bad payers.

Its a model ive been looking at for my business going forward, this first year will be the hardest getting to a point of making enough income to be able to revinvest but then once the balls rolling out source the canvassing, taking the best of it and dumping the rest, this way growth is almost limitless imo.

Just a thought

Jasy it is easier if you already have a round

Get knocking all the doors and roads in between your existing customers and you should get a few more

I had 1 in the snow today whose neighbour came out and asked me to do theirs ..first clean in the snow and then thought I'll flyer the neighbours (well business cards when i do neighbours as it looks good and i write on them things like did 44 today let me know if you want me to do yours also next time which seems to work)and got another who phoned when she got home this evening 3 doors away

Adam i had to do a business plan last summer for the council to give me a grant to set up new business (been doing it 24 years but spent the last few subbing off someone else)

On paper It shows how easy it can be

If you said an average house was a tenner and you canvassed 3 new jobs per day (or 15 a week of canvassing weekends)that is £600 for a month if working 20 days

Next month only getting average of 1.5 per day (7- 8 a week)and your income goes up 300 per month

How long before you have £2750 a month which is 33k a year..not very long (8 months)

Now be realistic about it as weather stops things and you have bad weeks canvassing etc give it a year and you can be on a good wage

Also I'd like to say i have heard nothing but good things about mark (whiZbizz)

From anyone who has used him so good luck adam

yep its true dave, the only thing you have to do to succeed in anything is make a plan then follow through, its the follow through thats the hard part but i believe its all there for the taking

If you can see it you can achieve it, its really simple but also really hard.

I agree mate

Had really good spells then have a week when couldn't be arsed to go out canvassing

No biggie but it slows you down when you have targets

I am aiming to have enough work that my son needs to work with me on a saturday and i'll have a day off in the week instead

He wants the money and i want the extra work so he can earn also

I want him to appreciate money

He will get a good wage for his age as how many 14 year olds earn a tenner an hour but he will know what it is like to work for it

It's how i was brought up climbing around on roofs at 15 and it has taught me to graft for what i want

Depends on what your aims are with your business.

For me personally, i broke up with my ex last year, lost my house and kids and ended up qutting my job severely depressed, antidepressants, sleeping pills, ended living back at my parents etc. i lost all my belongings in the house and ended up selling my fishing gear and my bikes to get by and got myself in a right mess.

Im now 33 with no savings and come from a background of always having minimum wage type jobs.

So for me personally i need to build a big business, get my life back on track i.e buy a house, free up some time to get back into my hobbies and afford the nicer things on life.

I had to hit rock bottom but its changed me in a big way and i cant explain it but at the moment starting this business has raised my self confidence and belief to a level i never thought possible

see i always thought success was for other people, like it wasnt possibe for me. Now i realise if you want it bad enough you will find a way, you have to have a desire.

a little off topic, but hey lol its all out there if ya want in enough

well said Davey I got my 14 year old with me when he can he loves it also getting good with pole on tops

Well done Adam

I think you have to hit the bottom to then be able to climb out

Had a few problems since dad died 15 years ago but this is the best thing you can do
