Hey Guys, I have a custy that wants me to clean her gutter at the back of her property above an extension, the angle it's too tight to be done from the ground so I was wondering if it would be ok to stand on the tiles? they are brand new but are expensive I think. what do you think guys?

brand new are often worse than old as they often havent had time to harden or weather..

I do remember a particular bay I er...rested my foot on for balance and...snap.

very lucky for me er frank...they had only just built it and some left over tiles were lying around ..still it was a bugger to get in ..

I still , despite banana , have to tile walk a bit but...I always step across the join, ie spread the weight across the two tiles..and always use the same route once I am happy with it..

I have one house in particular...where the roof is the way to do ALL they upstairs windows..

some did get broke near the velux but I think its that fat cat from next door..

at the end of the day that sound cuts right through you and you know all your profit from the job just went out the window...

but a tip you should have is ...carry some super strength bonding adhesive as often a quick blob and your away..

I must also point out that some brand spanking new tiles come with inbuilt cracks you can hardly see and will crack months after they have been laid...

not so long back I bought some roofing tools and supplies. I've climbed on slate many times, but heard snappy snappy on this brand new house I was working on. No getting away with it so I bit the buttet. Avoid slate at all costs now. But for normal tiles there is a proper way to walk on them, google it. Also, the first time you do a house, go very slow, and test you weight between each step, as the ones that break are usually the unsupported ones, and you can often feel and hear this before putting your weight on them.

When you say "clean" do you mean clean the outside of the guttering, fascia and sofitts or clear the guttering out?

Depends on the size/type of the extention both can still be done without tile walking.

Got any pics?

Thanks for your reply's chaps, I pretty sure that they are clay tiles, about 20mm thick.

I think she just want's me to clean the outside of the gutters, soffits and fasica, but I guess from that comment that if she wanted me to get a ladder up and clear them then that might be a h+s no no?

The angle is definitely to acute to do them from the ground

Speaking of tiles a roofer knocked on my door this morning to see if I would sell him a roof tile.

To cut a long story short they don't make them anymore and the closest he found that does reclemation tiles meant him to drive 200 miles round trip just for one tile he needed to finish off that job he was doing on the end of the terrace.

Can you guess my answer

it would probably be cheaper to do the 200mile drive than pay the smurf price for the tile..

I actually tell people to go and get the tiles or else .I have to charge for my time and money..

not that roofman exists any more unless its a very easy job./emoticons/biggrin.png.

I actually gave the roofer the tile on the understanding he now owes me a favour which he agreed /emoticons/smile.png

I still can't help myself and end up roof walking

Just gotta know how to do it

Over 15st and still just walk around on them

A good tip if you have to do it is to do it in trainers as they have a bit of give rather than hard soled boots

Yep @peter rogers my mate frank has done that too. Not to mention the little trick he uses to disguise freshly broken tiles. He rubs moss and shite into the crack tiles so it looks like it's been like that for years. :itwasntme:honest guv

walking on tiles dodgy tho as one bit algae and ur fecking gone and u will prob bring the gutter down with ya if u fall off lol

I don't remember the last time I went tile walking. I just won't do it these days. In the past Frank has come along, broke the odd slate and blamed me. /emoticons/wink.png

I try to stay off ground floor tiled pitch roof now as frank is always lurking about /emoticons/biggrin.png

Best one was when I was using a guttervac and a huge bit of mortar i hoofed out of the gutter fell onto a tiled pitched roof. Needless to say frank and his old moss trick came in handy but it snapped the tile clean in half so was not going to stay up there very long. Oops!

I'm waiting for the day that frank breaks a glass panel in a conservatory roof whilst cleaning gutters above it. That's seems to be the only thing he has not done yet but give him time and I'm sure he will.
