Builders cleans

Just wanted to know something, I have been doing builders cleans for a building company in london, they have payed me before with no problem and now they have asked me if I'm part of the cis scheme which I'm not and they said that if I'm not they will have to deduct 30% tax off the invoice price which I have already sent them and done the work, do I need to have cis?

Wow talk about a blag! I don't know anything about cis, but they should of asked that before the job, they can't backdate your price, thats their problem, they can only ask for it next time. And why would they need to deduct 30% tax? Sounds pretty cheeky to me!

That's what I thought , they deduct it and give it to hmrc

Ummm.. Yeah you are your own company, it's your responsibility to sort out your taxes with hmrc. If that's real then hmrc could still come after you, hmrc wouldn't accept "but the builders took 30% off me so its fine we're cool" lol. Sounds like a dodgy con to me.

But I know zilch about cis so hopefully someone else will chime in with what its all about, it could be true I guess. Although you owe them 30% for last time too then /emoticons/wink.png/emoticons/biggrin.png

So I guess you won't need to pay any tax on that job when you do your taxes at the end of the year. It seems hmrc just don't trust anyone in the building trade lol

Yeah I had a look at that bump but don't get it lol

So I basically have to register then they won't take the 30% off and I just pay my normal tax on it

Oh and no you don't pay any more tax on it, infact you may even get some back. Basically hmrc don't trust building sub-contractors so they want their tax upfront. You then do your accounts as though 30% tax has already been paid on that job and work it out from there.

All sorted and registered today [emoji106] getting payed full amount woohoo

They took 20% off the invoice price but any materials I used I can claim back somehow [emoji106]

This is a quick google of the CIS question but I believe (perhaps mistakenly) that you are exempt as you are not in construction proper, you are a cleaner.

I do not think this applies to you but I would email the HMRC to find out if you are exempt or not.

Should they deduct anything ENSURE they give you a receipt for payment complete with detailed tax deductions so you have it for your end of year returns.

Hi Neil

Just wondered how you went on with the CIS scheme as I have been told I need to join to continue in site ...

Did you apply to not have anything deducted or did you get 20%...?
