That's right, only if a customer asks for one for there own business reasons (like putting it through there books)

No need to mate unless they ask for one for one reason or another, never yet have I been asked for one on window cleans, I do get asked and offer a receipt/paid invoice for bigger one off jobs.
I think even if your VAT registered you don't have to supply a receipt to a residential customer, you just need to keep your own records of them which you would do anyway.
