Running a pump, direct without a controller?

J

Jon Grainger

Hi guys,

Is it possible to run a pump, (130psi, 6ltrs per min) without a flow controller, just connected directly on the positive and negative, of my Leoch LP12-20 battery?

Here is my battery as it has the specs written on the front-

I want to pump at full power for about an hour, with a break for the pump to cool. Is this possible with this setup do you think?

Regards

J

I think The pump will be happier running full blast as they are under strain when flow lowered
Mmmm, not sure that's correct mate. Imagine an engine at full revs and another ticking over. The 2nd will last longer as its not working as hard

That's incorrect mate, in fact the opposite is true- the pump is under much less strain with a controller. An uncontrolled pump will drain the battery much faster also.

I also think he will kill the battery as well probably within minutes. There is a difference between voltage and amps. If you compare it to water in a hose, voltage is the water pressure (12v) and current is the flow of water in the hose (amps). A Shurflo 5.2lpm pump 12vdc can use as much as 7 amps running flat out under load. That battery isn't rated to produce that power output.

In theory, if the battery could produce 7 amps continually, then the battery would be flat in less than 3 hours.

When I first started out I used a pump directly without a flow controller.

I does work but you burn so much water... Add a flow controller, you can get them off eBay for about £5.

Worth the money, plus you don't blast the Windows and get extra poop from window vents.

Ta.

Jase.
