no doubt youv seen small pickups used by trad windies. iv seen mainly Toyota hilux 2wd for the most part that seem good being low to the ground easy to hike ladders on and off View attachment 6469 . the wfp lads seem to go for the bigger 4x4 that are higher off the ground

today i saw what looks to be a good low contender this ssangyong was in Ipswich

Don't see the point if you're trad if your wfp then that's a different thing as loads easier than a van plus you get 5 seats

I toyed with the idea of a pickup.

Not convinced though for wfp. A flat tanks going to take up half if not a third of your trailer space, reels to put in, poles, i have a backpck to store (no reels needed) a ladder etc etc

Could just see it getting frustrating and tight working out of one of theses things. But I do love them.

Can't see the room myself and they ain't cheap things to buy and run.

I'd love to be convinces otherwise though

I was shown the Ranger by a company that was promoting them with a 500L system in the back.

When tank was full with reel and 1 pole driver and passanger you were at max payload. That was a crew cab as well. Not brilliant payloads for our business.

Aesthetic wise they look great. However, the thought of all your gear out in the open (unless you buy one of them removable roof thingys that look horrific and would be a pain to keep moving) would put me off. Things like, when it gets icy, you put a small rad in the back of the van. What you supposed to do with a pick up? Just my opinion, sorry if I've cheesed of any pick up owners out there

Completely agree steve.

Look fantastic but not suited to this game whatsoever in my opinion.

You could get the hydraulic hard covers that lift up nicely but don't forget everything's high up. Lumping the backpack off or winding reels up could be a right pain. Just not worth the aggro.

Shame really because I wouldn't hesitate to get one if it was more practical.

for trad use ,i can see the pickup benefits. most 2wd pickups have a lower roofline than vans with barn doors. the lower the better if you are humping ladders on and off all day. the last van [with barn doors] that was made with a low roofline was the ford escort. these were popular with all kinds of tradesmen for that reason.

the biggest windie firm in my area is trad and theyv recently changed from escorts to the new ford connect. im sure the workers will curse the extra height when it comes to loading/unloading the ladders

regarding the ssangyong in my photo i did a bit of online searching, seems it wont be any good as a trad windie wagon.its low which is why i thought its nice BUT its 4 wheel drive and because of that its heavy and because its 4 wheel drive it has a really big turning circle,no good at all for use on residential estates

So this is mine my second L200 it has 1200kg pay load i have a 400ltr flat tank in the load bed with pump box down one side telescopic ladder for odd access and pole goes on top of tank , Unfortunately the reel goes on the back seat but i have worked this way for going on 5 years now

Looks nice mate

Cheers Steve , I had a series 4 L200 Trojan previously with same set up it did around 33mpg , This one does supposed to do 42.5mpg not worked mpg out as yet i get 370 miles out of £60 of diesel so not bad .

I loved the escort van. I've had lots of them over the years. Perfect window cleaning van for trad. Tried various vans since. Vauxhall combo was slightly to high. Now got an astra but the tailgate catches my ladders. Escort was perfect with its barn doors

You would be surprised how curved the tailgate glass is. Wouldn't be easy to replace. I need a low van with barn doors. All manufacturers seem to go for cube now. Max payload for the parcel companies. They forget about the tradesmen who carry ladders and prob buy 33% of their vans

youre right its the cube these days but its an oversight/ mistake on the manufacturers part

i use berlingos ,on my 4th ! in 8 yrs which says something ,they dont take stick that well , they too are a tad too high for enjoyable ladder use. i was goin to buy a brand spanker crewvan berlingo from local main dealer but they messed me around and i lost faith. turns out crewvan berlingos are only made to order AND they take anywhere from 3 months to 6 months+++ to arrive. no good to me

We should start a campaign. Bring back the escort. Was perfect if a little slow.

if they made a new escort WE would be 1st in the queue! actually i bleve itd sell really well

youd think the Japs would make a small low roof van the last one i ever saw was a nissan sunny that was donkeys yrs ago,View attachment 6472 and THEY were really popular back then ,altho didnt have barn doors
