The recent thread on conservatory roofs got me looking at the Thomas Sanderson promo video and as you can see they do an exceedingly thorough job on a conservatory clean.

I doubt many of us are so thorough on the windows, as we know time is money on the glass so the more panes we can crank per hour the more we earn.

Personally I have gotten into the habit of breaking it down to three categories:

1: General window cleaning: Washing all the surface dirt off of the glass and frames and rinsing thoroughly to avoid spotting.

2: Deep cleaning: A thorough cleaning, a squirt of Ubik or Virosol and a good scrub to remove the more ingrained dirt and crud.

3: UPVC restoration: As it says, time for step 1 & 2 as well as brushing out all the crud in all the gaps between the frames and the sills, breaking out the cream cleaners and magic sponges where required and returning the windows and frames to as minty as they were the day they were fitted.

Now 95% of my customers have somehow fallen into this first category, the money is great, turn up blitz on get paid and onto the next. Not really satisfying though.

I do like to take pride in my work and I am wondering why I am not turning up to each first clean and giving it the full works, why not turn up, do a full deep clean and leave each and every window perfect? Then at least when you go the following month it would be a real easy maintenance clean, a quick whip round and the windows would look mint each and every time and you would have a seriously happy customers.

Yes it does have the down side that a typical semi could take an hour maybe hour and a half for a first clean but what price do you put on pride. I think I am approaching the stage where I can no longer be satisfied unless I know I have done each job to the best possible standard.

I know some will say 'charge more for first cleans' or 'why bother if they aren't paying for it' but we offer a Window Cleaning service, when did the level of clean become just what was acceptable and not what was possible?

If you took you car to the car wash and they brushed it with a soapy brush and rinsed with a hosepipe and used the argument that 'well you're only paying £10' you wouldn't be real happy would you? After all you paid for the car to be cleaned, not partly cleaned cause you weren't paying a premium for it.

Just my thoughts for the day.

I pick up new customers every week because there now ex windy only ever did green pros category 1 cleans

For me, it depends on what level of service the customer wants and is happy to pay for.

Every customer gets a No.2 to start with ([emoji23]). That's what I would class as a first clean. I charge more for a first clean and explain to the customer the additional work that goes into it etc. I started off by charging 50% extra for a first clean but now look at each job individually and charge accordingly.

After the first clean, everyone gets a No.1 every four weeks.

I totally get the having pride in your work thing but I don't think i've got enough pride to want to spend an hour/hour an a half on a first clean on a typical semi.

Fair enough if the customer is wanting that level of service and happy to pay for it but I think that, in reality, most people (especially near me) are happy with a £20 first clean and then a £10 maintenance clean as opposed to a £90 upvc restoration and then a £10 maintenance clean.

After a first clean with ubik and thoroughly scrubbed and rinsed properly a number 1 is all that is needed to maintain that perfect finish

I see we're u r coming from but I'm not doin upvc restore into the price

As stained white frames are hard to clean and very time communing

First cleans a 2 then maintenance cleans a 1, only do a 3 if they ask, if I did 3 all the time I doubt if be able to get enough work done, plus I think the prices would be too high for 99% of custies so I do it on demand where it's a 1 off price

Remember that u will have them for a long time. Ya have to do some graft once in ur life boys lol
I don't mind doing the graft, I just want to be paid properly for it. A first clean is often two or three times the work of a regular clean so I want to be paid two or three times as much.

Don't you ever get the odd customer who says they want their windows cleaned monthly and then cancel after the first or second clean? My first clean price is the same as my one-off price just in case anyone tries it on.
