Escort RS chat

Had a series 2 escort rst when i was 20. Went well until i ran about 12psi of boost one day. Chasing on orion 1.6 ghia down the m62 the engine let go at about 140mph, BANG - pulle doff onto a slip road oil and water everywhere. At the time me and my mate were apprentice mechanics, so we rebuilt it from scratch with a new block, mahle pistons, uprated head bolts, gaskets, cam shaft, lightened and balanced, the full works. Anyway i spend about 3k i think and try as we might we couldnt get it started. Eventually it ran for a bit then fuel pump packed in, fixed that but it never ran right, took it to a few garages and just couldnt get it sorted. Turned out the guys who rebored the cylinders had been out on there measurements and the pistion rings wernt quite seated properly. Anyway i ended up selling the engine and the rolling shell seperately on ebay and bought a n rs2000. Think i paid £1800 quid for it in 2001 ish on 90 plate

long story eh

I ran too much boost once (my fault for having the adjustable boost valve in the dash not under the bonnet as it's too tempting) and the bottom shells started rattling and the rings were shot anyway

Using hand tools as no compressor

Head off

Sump off

New rings

New shells

Honed the bores

New gaskets

Running again

1 hr 45 minutes

I love a cvh as they can be worked on blindfold once you have done the job once

Done the clutch in mates garage in under 30 minutes

Easy to crank the boost up to stupid levels, i had the boost but the fueling wasnt setup to match lol so ran lean as feck on full boost. Spinning the wheels in fourth was such good fun. Also i remember the turbos were so big and laggy, plant your foot, wait for it, wait for it...boom hang onto wheel for dear life with the torque steer trying to take you into the nearest field.

it's only a cabriolet but i love it, kept it off the road this winter to keep the miles down.
Hello guys .

I've had some interesting cars over the years , I wish I still had them parked up in a warehouse now they would be worth a fortune !

I'll list them off in order ( don't worry there's RS s in there)998 Mini Cooper , Mini Cooper S 970, very rare now , RS 2000 (new) MGB (new) MK 2 Lotus cortina, MK2

RS 2000, 2 Purgeot 309 GTI s ( new) Golf GTI , my old man had a 3.8 E Type Jag, I used to drive it now and again , Not to mention the bikes I've had , these days I drive a Citreon Belingo diesel 90 BHP , I'm on my third I get a new one every 3 years and use it for work does me with the ladders on top and 8 25 litre drums with WFP gear in the back , they are more comfortable than a van .

My biking mates laugh at me now pottering about in diesels and take the pi-s saying you'll be smoking a pipe and wearing a Deerstalker next LOL .

What do you reckon that lot would be worth now ? Most of them were mint .

Cheers lads .

Glenn .

Had some cars over the years.

List from first to last. Started when i was 18 at 1990 to buy cars. After BMW learned that you only need em to move from A to B.

BMW 316i 1988

Toyota Corolla Station Wagon 1996

Citroen Saxo 2002

Toyota RAV4 2001

WV Golf 1996

Toyota Highlander 2004

Nissan Micra 1988

Opel Kadet 1988

Fiat Punto 2002

Opel Corsa 1996 only had this for a day just to get the government bonus to buy my latest one

Opel Corsa 2016

Did some time use the most uglies cars [emoji41] they were cheap to use and got good tax deductions.

Now for The first time on my life got a brand new car. Hmmm it is Opel diesel automatic transmission

My next car will be hybrid SUV

View attachment 10862 Let's get back to cars. Found this ole pic of my xr4x4. Loved that car. Had it about 5 or 6 years. Had to sell it when baby number 4 came along. Got a people carrier! 2.8 injection. Was quick in its day.
The one change I made to my xr4 was to take the rear view mirror out.

I never looked back /emoticons/biggrin.png

Haha

On a serious note i don't have a rear view mirror in my car

Spent so long driving vans and lorries in the past i don't see the need for it

When i look in one like in my wifes car it is confusing as i am "what is that view"

Some van drivers get a camera to replace the mirror

I say learn to use the proper mirrors lol

My wife hate it when I'm reversing in the car as I never use the rear view mirror. Because, as you said davieboy, I'm used to van driving, ie, reversing using the door mirrors

Theres plenty cropping up with dealers but got to be very quick to get one.

I got mine off a local garage owner done 2.5k miles, all the options ticked on it and the colour I wanted, been umming n arrring about getting once sice release, this cropped up local so went to look 2 hours after he put it on ebay and had to have it.

3 calls came in and a couple of poss buyers turned up as I was doing the deal.

Had to finish early today so I could wash her, never feel like mine till I've washed em /emoticons/biggrin.png
