Cheers noddy.

Not seen any 1.7 engines. Just 1.3 or 1.6

I'm based in London so won't do many miles a day, about 20 max & most of that at 20mph.... Damn speed bumps, traffic lights & roundabouts!

I have a Vauxhall combo lwb it's only the 1.3 but it can hold a ton in weight.

I like the fact for a small van poles can fit in with out the need to go through the bulk head and into cab.

It has 2 side doors so getting ladders on and off is no problem.

And 0-60 in 25 mins:laugh:

I bought a connect 1.7 and I have never been in a slower van. Ok its done a fair whack mileage wise but god its so slow compared to my Belingo - there must be some thing wrong with it I reckon.

Hi,

I have two Fiat Doblo Maxi's. Payload is big for a small van at 1050kg. 1.6 Diesel engine. 50 mpg. The vans have been faultless. My only criticism is the steel bulkhead seems to let any spilt water through to the cab. It pools under the passenger seat. Other than that a great cheap small van with low running costs, plus they look smart and modern.

Difficult to compare. The earlier Transit Connect was a turbo charged Tddi engine which develops around 70bhp even with intercooler. The Berlingo was either a 90 in hdi form (no intercooler) or a 70 in the standard 1.9 non turbo model. The Transit Connect had a bit more torque than the 1.9 Berlingo but not much.

In the motor trade we always classed the 1.8tddi in the same category as the 1.9 engine. The common rail 1.8 Tdci engine brings the performance of the Connect onto a similar level as the Berlingo hdi. Ford also added a 110hp engine variant on sporty models for an extra price but you paid extra for the same engine with turbo boost in third gear. HP on a diesel engine doesn't mean all that much - its the torque that matters. (Many years ago British engine manufacturer Gardiner developed a 6 cylinder non turbo diesel engine (6LW) that developed 94 hp at 1500RPM. It was used in those small locomotives that shunt rolling stock in railway shunting yards. It had massive amounts of torque but only developed similar hp as an Hdi Berlingo engine.)

That 1.9 non turbo diesel was a revolution is those days. The Ford Escort had a 1.7 diesel engine which was so slow that anyone doing a test drive in a 1.9 Berlingo thought is was a turbo charged motor.

Sorry, I reminisce. /emoticons/smile.png

The problem with all these 'car derived' vans is that the cargo bay floor is higher than the foot-wells in the cabin. Often a plate is welded in to extend the floor over the rear foot-wells in the people carrier version. All Berlingos, Partners, Combos and Connects have the same 'problem'. Only way to solve it is the fully fiberglass and top coat the cargo floor extending it up the sides by a couple of inches and only allowing spilt water to drain at the side loading or rear doors.

Son in Law used roofing tape on his Connect which worked very well. He got a roll and activator from B & Q. His Connect had a solid steel mesh bulkhead so he run the tape along the edge of that across the back.

I love my non turbo diesel berlingo feels like a little go cart round some of the many lanes here in Devon.
