Used RO unit

I got this when i bought a knackered van with a van mount system included. It looks the dogs dangling bits but not got a glue what it is and how to use it, so looking for a little help please.

4040 r/o with a booster pump. Worth having although you may need to factor in a replacement membrane. First thing I would do is order a tds meter because without one you won't know if your r/o is working or not. Please buy a genuine one from a recognised wfp supplier. There are lots of cheap fakes on Ebay.

The blue prefilter is a 20" unit. You need to open that up and see what's inside. If its just a sediment filter then chances are the membrane needs replacing.

Ideally that prefilter should have a Fiberdyne carbon block filter inside that acts as a sediment and chlorine removal filter. You need to order a new one of those anyway as you won't know when it was last changed.

The pump next in line is a booster pump.

Water then goes into the r/o at the bottom flange. The waste is the hose directly opposite on the top flange. Hopefully, it looks like it has a tap on the end of the hose to throttle back the waste. It must never be completely closed. You need to aim for a waste to pure ratio of between 1 to 1 to 2 to 1 (waste to pure). You will need a tds meter to identify your tap water tds and the output tds of the pure to see if the r/o is working properly or not. The yellow hozelok tap connector is the pure outlet that will go to a di vessel to polish off any remaining impurities in your pure water before going to your van tank or ibc tank.

There isn't a di in the photo.

Thanks Spruce. I have a tds and a 100 gpd ro which I fill a wheelie bin and it takes a age haha. My water is hard 300 so will see what it comes down to with this machine later today. Will report back later. Does belt the water out compared to my other machine.

From your first post I gathered you had never seen an r/o before.

Had I known you already had one I would have answered slightly differently. Sorry.

The little RO I have was for my marine fish tank and now does my water for the few window cleaning jobs I do. Want to move forward with my window cleaning so would like to get this new RO set up. My water is 300 and after its been through this new RO it is about 15 depending on how much I open the valve. Will be looking on ebay now for a used DI vessel.

Its running at about 95% efficiency which usually means the membrane is getting close to the end of its life.

Not knowing what psi output that booster pump is, I wouldn't know whether a replacement is an HF4 or HF5. I would also be inclined to add another prefilter housing - so sediment first and then carbon block second. I prefer to use a Fiberdyne carbon block prefilter.

I would be inclined to order a new di vessel. Gardiners have them on special at the moment. You are guaranteed a fully working unit from them.
