Hello all

I'm currently using wfp trolly and backpack setup.

I can have up to 10 Barrels in back of my van. I'm having problems trying to get a set up where the Barrels will stop rolling around when driving. I have tried tying bungee cord but did not work well.

Was thinking some kind of netting maybe.

Anybody who has Barrels. In back on van and not a tank and has some good ideas if you could post a pic or two.

Many thanks.

I'm building a wooden frame for the barrels for the back of my car in the next few weeks, I've the same trouble, once I've made it ill put some pics up

Yeah, as stated above. Wooden frame is the way to go. I have done this in one of my van and they dont go anywhere. Just build a frame with 2 by 2, then screw it to the walls and floor, making sure your screws don't go too far through. Then ply it, and its job done.

I used a ratchet strap when I used barrels in my van.
cheers for the reply gents. Made a wooden frame today. will test it out tomorrow after a days graft and will post pics to follow.spudly

Sorry but if you're going to the trouble of building some kind of wooden frame or whatever, why don't you just get a proper tank?

Actually why don't you just get a proper system?

I can understand a new starter who doesn't have a van using barrel in the boot of the car, but if you have a van, then get a proper system, or at very least, a proper tank. At some point you have to stop messing about and decide you're going to make a go of it. I guarantee this - after you've used a proper van system for just 1 day, you'll say to yourself "WHY DIDN'T I DO THIS BEFORE!"

I predict a riot..... I predict a riot :eek::eek::eek:

I don't agree with you Pete! When I switched to wfp I got a backpack to start off, changed to a van system and used it for a few weeks and went back with the backpack and never looked back again.

I too loath backpacks. They have a place but not as the main tool.

I love my van mount and do believe when set up right they cant be beaten.

What I do struggle with is the van owners with 20 barrels rolling round in the back why not just bang a tank with fat tap on it instead of faffing with barrels?

There is no right or wrong on this, no 'correct' way of doing things it's horses for courses.

Just cause someone chooses backpack or trolley dont mean they're 'messing about'

For me van mount is the only way but that's just opinion.

We use 22 25 ltr containers and 2 trolleys been doing that now for 8 years mine dont roll around

I use barrels and back pack but I also trad a fair bit. I've got ladders on top, plus barrels, pole, steps and all other equip on board and it reduces the speed of my transit connect. I tried with some telescopic ladders but they were sh!te

I plan on getting a van mount once I have so much work on that I cant cope, so at the rate Im going, that will prob be some time next summer. However, I think you always need ladders on your van and for me telescopics are rubbish

My barrells sometimes move about but I try to position them so they cant. I've got 2 of those blue tesco delivery crates in the back of the van and I use them to stop stuff flying about

Have used both van mount now using car with backpack to stop barrels I use cambuckle straps only £5.99 from screwfix through tie down points on back of rear seat

I moved to a van mount some time ago (350L tank - which has probably increased my speed by a good 30%) but this is how I used to secure my barrels. Timber secured to the van load ties via carriage bolts.

Sorry I don't agree. I started with van system 650 Ltr and a 100m hose reel. Good system but trying to get parked in the centre of Bath was sometimes a nightmare. I switched to a trolley and barrels about 2 years ago and haven't looked back. I can park where there is a space and wheel to where the work is. Happy dayz

It's the swapping of barrels with the home made trolley that annoyed the he'll out of me, humping them about etc.

Well, I permanently fixed one barrel to my trolley (or could just use a backpack same idea)

Them for about 12 quid I bought a bilge pump off ebay and put it in my tank.

Now instead of humping loads of barrels about when I run out of water I simply return to the van unscrew top stick hose in and flick a switch, within 20 seconds the barrel is re filled and off I go.

For the record I think a backpack and a trolley to put it on Is better than a barrel based trolley, lighter, less bulky and easier to carry.

Trolleys and backpacks are quicker on some jobs definately. but in an ideal world I would get rid of any that require a backpack. they are usually through the house, awkward parking or wheel round the back jobs. a van mount us easier if you have the right jobs.

I have the transit connect lwb hightop and can park anywhere a car can wouldn't change from a van mount now normally done the front of a house before it would take my five minutes flavering about before I started to clean, I still use a backpack on some jobs so as it's place, just my opinion and works well for me.

True when I had van mount system I had a transit now I have a pug partner with trolley. Love it

Anyone thought of daisy-chaining the 25l barrels together, so they behave as a single tank?

Yes, the bulkhead fittings would probably set you back more than a proper tank, but the barrels would work as a baffle to avoid sloshing.
