had a few receptionists turn me away (with clearly fake reasons) when commercial canvassing.

Any ideas / tips on getting past them?

Thanks in advance guys!

If you can't get taking to the right person try and get the company email address for help and support for example.

A nice note adding that your aware this needs to be forwarded on but can they please do that. Not ideal but a percentage will pass on the info. You could always back this up with a call back a day or two later to prompt it.

Receptionist love the power and usually fail to apply common sense, they think their protecting the senior managers. They love rules and apply them to the detriment of the organisation. A good receptionist could save a company tidy bit of money each year but I've met very few. Good luck

Thanks @Chris33

Tell me about it @BigFoot yesterday I went into a place and said I'm here about the window cleaning. She said oh great! Have you got an appointment? I said no, she said in that case we already have a window cleaner

Maybe this would work,

Hi I'm looking to see if I can save your company money on their cleaning costs, could I arrange a meeting with facilities manager.

The receptionist then has a valid reason to cooperate it could save company money.

Iv not tried this yet but I'm planning on for gutter cleaning when I get up and running with it.

Lol sorry Chris it was meridian s quote I was supposed to quote

@meridion the best thing to say is "hi its Tony from th window cleaning, who is the best person to speak to about your window cleaning needs"

Only every 3 responses to this

1 it's dave __ great can I speak to dave or can I have his email address to send an email

2 we have a window cleaner __ great glad to hear, who would be the best person to speak to regarding your window cleaning in case any issues with your current or if I can save you some money.

3 we don't pass on info but you can have generic email address info@blahblah

Once you have the name send email, call 3 days later and say is dave there, who's calling it Tony The Window Cleaner.

Good luck bud

You can't really argue with that. She seems genuine because she responded in a way you said was happy to see you, but you don't have an appointment.

If she let every salesman through the doors, the company would fold.

Why didn't you ask to arrange a meeting?

I've spent 25 years in b2b selling and done/read most techniques and receptionist if handled correctly can help you more than you'd know, buts it's a numbers game. I've used every trick and used every suggestion but what's has worked for me is show some vulnerability, ask for their help, be polite, be yourself and remember a sense of humour.

In short my opening gambit is "I wonder if you can help me, I've just started my own window cleaning business and .......... own little story

Also receptionists can see every rep from selling widgets to services all trying the same, so you need to be different for them to help you.
