Hi guys my name is Rohan & I have just started and loving it. Meeting new people and making clients happy. I don't need help with equipment or other essentials. I need advise from the pros, the people on the front line. I'm 21 and Boxing Day I was involved in a car crash that changed my life (for the better) I have always been a grafter and I believe my life choices has brought me to want to start my own cleaning business. I have the motivation and drive to build my own rounds and keep pushing through the cold. At the same time I would love to go uni, not just for a degree but to understand how business work & take my company further. The only issue is by time I finish uni I could of already be making £300-700 a week and counting. Now my questions are should I go to uni? Or could becoming a great window cleaner financially support me, my future family and my love for cars? I'm not looking for a job (just over broke) and I could never work for someone so...

A lot of guys and girls at Uni dont have the slightest idea of how the real world or business works. Quite a few of the big entrepreneurs in this world dont have any degrees . I believe in learning by doing , and from what i Can hear of your mindset , you would freak out at a campus . Ive done this for 17 yrs. Its a lifestyle more than a job . Wouldt change it for anything! The Things you wanna learn , isnt tought at any uni .

How could a car crash change your life for the better? And forget uni and put all your efforts into your cleaning business is my opinion! /emoticons/wink.png

Ok, here's my opinion and I'll try to focus on your question but my personal bias will flavour what I have to say.

I went to university did well, worked for the man for 10 yrs. I enjoyed university. Ok reality check, do you want debt? The average student debt leaving university is £44,000!

My advice to anyone would be invest £44,000 into a Buisness, build a round, buy into a franchise, whatever.

I see student debt as a way to manipulate the masses and control the herds. By the way student debt is bankruptcy proof it will follow you accumulating interest until the last payment ( law changed in 2004) it's the new mortgage for the young who can't get on the property ladder. btw if you do both, I worked 35 hrs a week and did full time university at same time I promise you'll have zero social life but it is total doable)

I understand the wanting to improve yourself a worthy worthwhile goal. Personally I would Find out what you want to learn and read books use iTunes university, Khan academy, TED talks etc. Because if you do go to university that is ALL YOU WILL DO ANYWAY!

My opinion of course and I'm sure whatever you decide you'll be happy with your decision, I think your doing the right thing asking others to use as a sounding board some things I've said you may like other bits you disagree with but if it helps in the process then all good.

i personally wouldn't uni on the back of being a better business man and understanding business better at the end of it- makes no sense to me- no business degree will take you there- if you want to go uni i wouldnt let the debt be a factor my mrs did a degree i think she pays back about 19 quid a month back- lowest interest loan you will ever have- and will have no bearing on borrowing money i future- your decuson at the end of the day you will find it hard to do both at same time unless you go uni in your home town obviously-

i have friends who have been uni who have done the degress done the masters then phd so now doctors chasing the job that never comes...unemployed or folding t shirts in a shop

Go to Uni, U must get days off or hours, start building a trial window business near your campus.

If you decide one or the other is not working out then you will have the other to fall back on.

Good luck with it either way

On mikewell's higher predictions of £700 earnings a week he would be paying of £241 a month and will repay a total of £59,181 over 20 years without taking Into consideration the student loans company Changing the terms of the loan ( already done this in the past). The whole system is to keep us in servitude!

A business degree is waaay overkill for the kind of expertise needed for a window cleaning business.

Not to say that the info isnt useful but you can find out what you need to know as you go, googling and watching you tube vids.

I tried it all. Dropped out of uni (never failed a thing but really wasn't for me), dropped out of employed work (never been fired but really wasn't for me) and found myself a nice spot among the great and mighty sole traders. A realm of mavericks and renegades!

I did an engineering degree between 1982 and 1986, worked in various engineering roles until 1995 when I quit and bought a shop. I've been self employed ever since and have no desire to return to the ranks of the employed.

I enjoyed my time at university but it was definitely aimed (at least back then) at becoming employable.

If you want to study for a degree then go for it but be aware that there's no substitute for experience and you'll learn a lot more about business by being out there and doing it!

Totally agree with @BigFoot

Why spend time and get into debt learning about business, when you can just be in business in the first place. The latter will teach you so much more and equip you with skills that you can apply to another business later on in life.

But each person must choose their own path..

take 6 months to 1 year trying to build a few rounds.

have you got any gear yet. trad or wfp.

sell up and go to uni if its not 4 you

its a sellers market all the time
