The tds meter i bought was on amazon, hope it's ok to post this?
Semlos 0.01 Resolution Digital PH Meter Large LCD Pen Water Quality Tester with Auto Calibration Function and 0.00-14.00 Measurement Range: Amazon.co.uk: DIY & Tools

I take it you just get a glass of water from tap and pop the meter in and turn on?
I have never heard of anyone's water that hard. Hartlepool is the worst water I've come across and that's around 550.

First of all I would buy a genuine TDS meter from a recognised wfp supplier.

DAQUA - Suppliers of TDS Meters, PH Meter, EC Meter

HM Digital TDS-3 Handheld Meter With Carrying Case. I have the earlier one which doesn't have a temperature read out.

Doug also used to stock calibration fluid but I see its out of stock ATM. Mine is nearly 12 years old and still accurate when I test it in my calibration fluid. All its had is a set of new batteries.)

Yes, you get a glass of water from tap and pop the meter in and turn on. You put the meter in far enough so the 2 prongs are submerged in the water.

Once you have an accurate reading of your tap water TDS you will then be able to make an informed decision on water purification.

BTW, I can't include myself as an r/o expert. Doug definitely is in my books though.

Hi mate, thanks for replying. I've ordered the HM Digital tds meter thank you for that. The TDS I ordered got good reviews but I was a bit shocked how high it was. Is PPM the average tds in Dublin?

Forgot to say that I measured the TDS in my water butt and it was 810.

It would be interesting if you could catch some rain water direct from the 'heavens' and see what the tds of that is. A large bowl on a table in the rain would suffice as long as it isn't under trees etc.

Our rain water is about 2 or 3ppm but getting it off the house roof is around 34ppm.

Oh, BTW I can't possibly understand how a tds meter could be self calibrating.

No, it will be what one poster has posted his is.

Its just a rough guide. We have a TDS in Middlesbrough of 147 according to the poster who posted it.

We live in Saltburn which is 10 miles away. Although the area draws its water from the same source of Kilder dam in the Scottish Boarders, Northumbrian Water also draw water from numerous small dams they own in our area. Our water varies between 99 and 125ppm.

Resin seems fairly expensive too so probably end up zipping through it. I've seen some posts on here about RO units. I don't know why I thought my tds would be low, not sure why I had that in my head lol. Would one of those reverse osmosis unit be a viable option to make water pure at home and then put it in containers in the car?
Calling @spruce & @doug atkinson, they the experts with RO

Jesus i've made a mistake ffs. It's 7.20!!!
I'm an absolute moron, the decimal point is so low that I couldn't make it out. Lol what an idiot :blush:
I'd go with a TDs of 72, so you'll get away with DI only, but if you've ordered a new meter double check it first with the new one.

You'll get a warning for language, so go easy on the forum. You don't want a ban so soon.

I don't understand why they put a decimal point in the mix as its so confusing. It definitely won't be 7.2 ppm. Did it come with instructions as they must use a different measuring scale?

Sorry i've edited the post cheers. I've ordered the other one just incase this one is dodgy, I shouldn't have went for a cheap one it's my own fault. But glad to hear that the water in Dublin is low levels save me a few quid with the RO unit. I contacted guy in x line systems about their 45l trolley system. Looks pretty good.

Would you recommend something like this?

This meter isn't a TDS meter. It measures water acidity (Semlos PH Meter is the perfect device for determining the acidity or alkalinity of liquids.)

So the 7.2 has little relation to the amount of dissolved solids or minerals in the tap water you want to test.Your water is simply slightly acid.

(Our pH is measured on a scale from 0 to 14, with around 7.35 being neutral (normal). The pH numbers below 7.35 are acidic (with 0 being the most acidic) and the numbers above 7.35 are alkaline (with 14 being the most alkaline).

You want a TDS meter. You don't want an EC meter, just a plain and simple TDS meter. /emoticons/wink.png

TBH, no.

The unit wouldn't be suitable for residential work as you will need to negotiate steps on paths etc. 45 liters of water weighs 45kgs + the weight of the unit. How can you lift a half full trolley into your car? Will it leak on its 'back'. If it doesn't then how does the tank breath?

I would rather go this route as its easier to remove a half filled plastic container and put the unit and the container in the car separately.

In fact I have seen a local lad leave the whole unit in his car (the PF equivalent) and use a hose reel to get to the customer's windows. Once the container is empty, he just transferred the suction hose to the next full container.

You raise some very good points. I only do commercial work though, I don't do residential. I going to fill the unit up when it was out of the car but putting it back in with water in it could be really tricky.
I was looking at the 25l one also and might be a better shout alright

I appreciate its just a little more expensive but makes better sense, but only you know your customers and their businesses.

However, there was an advert on Ebay for a system for sale that went into a Vauhaul Combo van that had a permanent rear seat conversion. So this would be a good idea if you had a Renault Kangoo or a Berlingo Multispace or Peugeot whatever. I thought it was such a good idea I copied the photos.

The tank is a 250 liter one. Quick release brackets and bolts could be made up so the unit could be removed from the vehicle when necessary. We used to supply crew vans with a quick release rear seat so it could be quickly removed if extra space was needed in the cargo area.
