Clearing Blocked Gutter Corners

I've cleaned asbestos guttering a lot of times. I always soak them with a hose to make sure they are wet. Don't clean them dry as the dust will get disturbed and then breathed in.

Make sure all the muck in them is soaked, it will keep the dust down. Other than that it's the same as any other gutter and can be confused with cast iron guttering until you have a closer look.

As you look in them you will notice tiny fibres which shows you that it's asbestos. I wouldn't disturb them, break them or remove them. Tell the customer they are asbestos and I suspose you could charge more but if they are soaked there isn't any risk as far as I know.

Yep as he did not want to spend a few grand to have it taken down and replaced with plastic. /emoticons/biggrin.png

Lol was it a male one /emoticons/wacko.png

I did not bother to wet it down on that one as the **** in the guttering was wet enough /emoticons/wink.png

Mind you I also conduct a water test afterwards to test for leaking joints and dowspouts worked as they should so ended up flushing all the guttering on that property too.

I always carry my gutter clearing ladder setup as trying to use a guttervac would have been usless on that job /emoticons/biggrin.png

I knew they were asbestos cos I have asbestos on my house. I clean out the gutters every year. The stuff on your pic looks wet already, I guess it was due to all the rain and how long it takes for guttering muck to dry out. I am willing to light a fire here and be proved wrong, but cleaning from out the odd guttering job with asbestos gutters with gloves and face mask will not give you asbestosis. Persistently working with it probably will.

yes the more you work with it the greater the risks, but even if you do a days work without the right mask etc on, and if you are breathing in any dust from it then that can still do you damage, not life threatening, unless lots and lots of dust.

It's like if you work with any of the loft insulation too, you can soon feel the effects of that getting to the back of the throut.

Smurf a 1930`s` building 5 min work asbestos guttering more risk eating a Big Mac than getting any asbestos harm from that lol
