Di vessel and pre filters?

I have just ditched my RO and use big DI vessel only as I feel bad about the waste water( my sister lives in Africa so i just feel guilty pouring clean water down drain!) - Is there any point in still using the pre filters ( carbon- sediment) ???

Thanks for your help

You must be lucky enough to live in a low tds area , my tds is 380 so I'd never ditch my trusty ro.

Yes there's a lot of waist from it but I'm still paying for it (I'm on a meter) the waist goes down the drain and straight back to seven trent water treatment plants so all that's waisted really is my own money

You'd be better off using two DI vessels in sequence. Here's how it works-

One vessel is filled with fresh resin & the other acts as a pre-filter to it.

Start initially with one vessel. When this begins to go off i.e. reading 004/5ppm this is when you add the second vessel with fresh resin & use the 00/4/5ppm one to pre-filter it. Ok, the TDS will rise in the old vessel but while ever it's below the normal input TDS it's saving you money. So now instead of throwing away a vessel full of resin which is still purifying water to a good degree, you are using it to pre-filter your new resin.

Hope that makes sense, this is how most DI only users are set up these days./emoticons/wink.png

Just to add to that- you then continue the cycle with both vessels. When the newer one eventually begins to go off, fill the oldest one with fresh resin & use what was the newer one to pre-filter the now fresh vessel.

So how do you feel about flushing the toilet with perfectly good drinking water....you could use an IBC tank to store this RO waste water and plumb this to your toilet cistern if feel so bad about wasting water /emoticons/wink.png;).

Great advice cheers

I already do this myself, it's a great idea and makes the second resin last for ages

also RO is too slow

And I will just pee in shower ha

I've run a 400ltr system with this method for over ten years & my average resin usage is 3 to 4 bags per year. I've just moved to a 500ltr tank but don't expect much to change as I still use 400 more often than not. Also, if you have the vessels on the van (which I recommend you do) & purify on-demand, you can fill your tank from anywhere- so if you run low you can top up via customers outside tap as you're only holding tap water in the tank.

And welcome to the best Forum around .

Yes with that water tds a ro would be pointless, how much resin a year are you expecting you would use ?
No idea how much resin as just changed

I used Ro for 5 years and never changed resin and never went above 0 ppm

I like the look of the quick change unger hi flo resin

I too purify on demand. My at tap reading is currently 70. 2x 11ltr vessels works very well. I change one vessel every 6 to 8 weeks. Average 400ltrs daily.
