got to tell you this one....ronund February time I was working on a regular road, an old guy came out from 3 houses down from were I as working, he asked if I could do his windows and his neighbours, so I finished the job I was doing and went to see him and give a price. Price agreed the old lad went on to tell me he and his neighbour used to have a window cleaner, but had'nt seen him since December......in fact the Saturday before Xmas....apperntley he turned up at 8 o clock at night that Saturday and asked him "is there any chance you could pay me tonight and I will come and do your windows on Monday...!!! He did the same with the old guys neighbour....both did pay him and neither have seen him since. The old guy said "Ii thought it strange, but he'd been doing the windows for the past 6 month and thought it would be ok......too trusting

.I wonder how many more oldies that winidie went round that Saturday night collecting his beer money....dispicable....

Must have been a druggie or something that needed the money quick. Any windy knows he can make a quick buck just by selling his round, and it will be more then just one cleans worth, not to mention honest.

I was out knocking on doors early January. Got to a house were all the gutting was down. Got talking to the old fella 82. He paid someone to clear the gutters, the guy took it all down and left. I went home but it was doing my head in. So I went back at the weekend and put it back up for him. He asked me to clean his windows while I was there. He was completely made up when I said I didn't want paying for the guttering.

Why would you take the guttering down. There's some d!(€s around.

I have come across stuff like this a few times, guttering bodged and charged full whack for.

One that still annoys me though is I did an old ladys patio and path over the winter, she couldn't leave the house as it was so slippy, gave her a good price as I do with old people. While there I noticed her windows were terrible, they had like a thin film of like white chalk all over them. So I cleaned her windows free of charge at the end, when I told her she was really happy and went on to tell me she had two lovely chaps who had been cleaning her windows for a couple of years now. The windows had not been cleaned in those couple of years, not once. She was partially blind so my guess is they knew that and just take her money every month.

Wanted to tell her, but then thought I would end up sounding like I was slagging them off to get the work for myself, so didn;t say anything, still pisses me off because I bet they still go each month and take her money for nothing......

Sounds like a tricky situation @Diwrnach as like you said, you wouldn't want to sound like you're bad-mouthing a competitor just to get work! Wonder how many others they're doing that to as well!

I would of had a word with the neighbours to get them to tell her

She would believe them if you showed them first

I had already cleaned all the windows by the time I found out. A word with the neighbours might have worked though.

Indeed, it is one I think about all the time, if they do it to one they must do it to more.

People like that are the sort of scum which makes people think we are all dodgy

I don't know about you guys but some new cleans i get i get watched like a hawk the first time..usually the ones who have dropped their old windie for not doing a proper job

Funny you say that mate, last week I got a new clean, really nice big house, she said she already had a window cleaner but he doesn't do the frames and sills, so I go and do the job, its my last job of the day, put an invoice through, now there was a car on the drive but no answer and the house seemed empty.

By the time I get home, which is maybe 10-15mins the money has been paid into my account and I have a message on facebook asking me to lease come regularly.

After thinking about it for awhile my guess is she was in and was watching me work and hadn't got rid of her old cleaner until she saw what kind of job I did.

@Shiny @monkeyman situations like that can give others a bad name! It's unfortunate but one off incidents can leave an impression on people and give a false impression of what most are actually like!
The thing with living in a smallish town word soon gets around good and bad. So all I have to do is keep to my standards high and the work comes to me. It's hard to believe I'v only been at it for a year.
