Aluminium poles should be banned..

Had a massive day out gutter cleaning today. Three 3 bed semi with extensions and I was there pulling out moss and muck with 6 aluminium extensions (600 grams each) tilted to 45 degrees for about two hours on each house.

Felt like in hell. On the last house I was so exhausted that I vent tile walking (didn't ever think I will ever do it) to get all the grass out of the overdue gutter over the extension.

Came home and first thing I did - ordered a new gutter vac with carbon fibre poles from www.guttercleaningsystems.co.uk

This is not an advertisement as I have no connection to Alex Day whatsoever (except that the previous gutter vac I got from him too and I loved it till today.. and I am doing at least 5 gutter jobs a week) just a little advice based on my short experience - if you are buying a pole or a gutter vac - aluminium is not the choice to go for.

Well - only if you are in doubt about how your new business is gonna pick up (my case - I have aluminium everything atm except the 35 slx) but if you know you can make some serious money with your tools - do not try to save few quid as it is just gonna ruin your days work and mood at the end of it.

So CHEERS and let the weekend begin!

Do you specialise in gutter clearing Norm? How do you get a lot gutter work?

I have carbon poles and they are great but not as hard wearing as alloy.

A little tip I have found when coupling them together is to plop each end in a bucket of water.

This helps to lube them and remove any little bits of grit that will tear them apart.

I learnt this the hard way, had cleaned everything out at the end of a job but on my next clean I pushed two ends together and split the tube, it was only a little bit of grit like green mineral roofing felt.

No not really. When first started 3 month ago full time on windows I got myself a cheap gutter vac just in case some of my customers would ask to get them done. And then I started to advertise it on my flyers and facebook page. The result is I am flat out on gutters atm as I am fairly cheap comparing to other window cleaners (a regular 3 bed semi takes me an hour to do and I charge 50€ just to empty them).

Thanks, mate!

That does seem cheap but then again how long does a three bed semi take you?

around 50 min van to van.
So you're getting a nice average hourly wage of around £60. Can't complain with that!

What advertising methods do you find bring in the most jobs?

60 an hour!? I wish! I know it sounds good to earn 50 quid for a 50 min job but it is hardly true - you need to count in travel time, diesel and then time to time I am getting a job where I would be 2 hours for the same money (narrow gutters full with sh**). So on average 30 per hour is realistic. And I am earning euros here..

At the moment only few jobs from facebook and advertising site I am using, but most of it is word to mouth and recommendations.

What was the cheap gutter vac you got?

I have one. Wat u do with old on.
Dont know yet. Was planning to sell it but not sure now as I can get probably 250€ for it and maybe it is better to keep it as a backup just in case something goes wrong.

That small thing earned me a lots of €€. Hard to work with but it does the job.
