We ran a 450 gpd (3 membrane) r/o with 40 - 50 psi tap pressure for 6 years without a booster pump.

Was slower in winter but we still managed with 2 people.

 
I put the booster pump after the pre-filters. Regular pressure through your 3 vessels and then high pressure into the membranes

 
Basically I cut the tube the comes out of the last pre-filter and the booster pump goes there.

I had to extend the tubing as there wasn't enough length. I used inline John guest connectors for this

So, cut the tube, put on a connector then ran a new length of tubing into the pump. Another new length from the 'out' side of the pump to another inline connector and the rejoin into the RO membranes

 
When I read your post the other day I wrote a reply asking if someone had dropped it and cracked the filter housing. I didn't post it as I figured "course they didn't" ;-)
