Any one had trouble with tanks in van causing insurance difficulties? Just called Alexander Swann (window cleaning insurance specialist), who won't even quote if tank is not professionally installed and baffled. Other brokers are starting to get a bit jumpy over the tank installations as well.

you will find that on each company, everything need to be fitted in professionally for it to be covered on the insurance.

So you are saying that everyone that fits a tank into their own van is not covered, their vehicle insurance is nul and void?

Rubbish, each insurer is different.

I called & told mine that I'm putting a tank in & they said that's fine- no change to premium or anything.

Of course, the tank itself won't be covered for theft or anything, but neither is anything in your van unless you have special cover for it, which I take out separately, it's called goods in transit cover.

Just taken out insurance. Told them I was a window cleaner, will be using vehicle for window cleaning. Tank in vehicle is not a modification as I am using existing load restraints/'d' rings. No particular issues at all. I think Alexander Swann has come under the spell of ionics as they offer a fully kitted out Ionics van if you are in an accident. Sounds fine, but just Ionics trying to dictate game. I notice that both businesses are based in Swindon. All my opinion of course.

I do take tank security very seriously. I met another window cleaner a few weeks ago, he had a 1000 ltr tank held in by a thin load strap hooked, hooked I tell you! onto part of the inside of van. No chance of it stopping movement. The hook itself would've just straightened out.

I told my insurance company i will be carrying a tank full of water up to 400litres they were okay with it...... And if your tank is not fitted in an its just strapped with van ratchet straps then that is not a modification..... thats just carrying good around /emoticons/smile.png

no not saying that, its just something that alot wil say or try and get out of if anything bad happens.

take it you havent seen a crash with a van that hasnt got a pro fitted tank??

I had a conversation with the insurance brokers,Gladiator, today (trying to sell me extra insurance) and I raised this issue of tanks in vans etc. Apparently the company they put me with, Ageas, are happy to insure vans with tanks up to 650 ltrs. As mine is a 350 ltr it didn't flag up as a problem.

Thought you might like to know.

Pip pip.

Having similar conversations again this year - "tank in van is a modification blah blah". I would agree if it was bolted down with fixing through the floor, but as I'm just using the load restraints provided by the vehicle manufacturer (mercedes) for the purpose of securing loads I don't.

Getting quotes online as a "window cleaner" doing "window cleaning" using vehicle to "carry my own goods".

Just wondered, if a tank in the van is a modification, would a roof rack bolted on be the same? I've never had a conversation regarding that.

I had a mate who didn't secure his ladder properly, narrow country lane, sudden stop, ladder shoots of into radiator of on coming vehicle. Turns out it was another window cleaner. He shoots - he scores!!

I am with gladiator (RSA) and yeah 650 or less and they are good to go.

FYI I paid more to avoid being insured with ageas (connected with fortis) they have an extremely bad reputation for not paying out, etc etc etc etc.

Just resurrecting this old thread as i'm after a better deal on my current insurances.

FYI direct line do not insure you if you have a water tank fitted of any description.

Just been on the phone to Alexander Swan and they can arrange cover for any tank no matter how it is fitted. Just waiting for their quote.

Any other recommendations? I'm looking for van insurance, equipment cover and PL all with one broker ideally

I was with dial direct and they cancelled mine when I called to ask if it classed as a mod ended up going with Alexander Swann very happy up to now they sent all docs quick and now cover my liability and tools in vehicle and I saved a few quid combining them

Hi @Alien Human thanks for the question! Our van insurance is sourced through a third party specialist car/van insurance company so I'm not entirely sure! I'm finding it out for you now and will let you guys know

Just had a reply from my contact over at QuoteZone who our van insurance is through, unfortunately they're unable to quote for a van with any modifications of this kind.

How're you getting on @vito61? Still struggling?

Yep I'm with a plan and haven't had any probs at all [emoji106]
