pipe carrier for smaller van.

How does everyone keep their brushes on the roof whilst cleaning. do you have to alter the pipe carrier so you can somehow lock it whilst keeping the brush head on? the back of my van doesnt seem big enough for poles so any help appreciated. cheers guys.
