I was hoping that the new speed limits granted to HGV drivers of vehicles over 7.5 t would have a knock on effect down the line to us. Unfortunately if we have a van with a gross weight of over 2000kgs, then the speed limits for us haven't changed.

Single carriageways 50mph

Dual carriageways 60mph

Motorways 70mph

I'm on c roads all day. Lucky if I do 40!

Have dreams of hurtling down the main road at 55, ladder whistling above me.......

yeh daveyboy your hgv friends are on fake britain this morning....fake tachographs...really naughty...driving for twenty hours a day...:eek::eek:

cheapie only drives at normal speed limits......honest...

Well that sucks. I was shocked to find out us vans are on a lower speed limit than cars, and even campervan etc when I got pulled over in a line of traffic a few months back. Been driving vans/trucks for over tens years and never knew or got pulled up on it. Be careful incase they are clamping down (aka short of cash) in your area. What changes are being made to 7.5t plus then?

40 to 50 on single carriage, 60 mph on dual carriageways and motorways. Came in in June

Yep there is one like that not far from me

It goes by the height of the vehicle to differentiate between cars and lorries so only a big vehicle will set it off unless you're going faster than the limit for cars which will then trigger anyway

i bought a chinese satnav -after reading about them on truckers forum- 30,40 quid touch, these are excellent ,they speak if you go over the speed limit , has saved me getting a ticket no end of times

Nah...not for me ......would make me hungry ....

I'd be expecting a 'takeaway meal' hearing a little Chinese voice saying 44..66..53..35..etc etc .

I understand its related to number plate recognition software.

It can differentiate between car derived vans that are below 2000kgs and those above. For example. A Berlingo/Partner 800lx 2.0hdi diesel to 52 plate was under 2000kgs, so the normal car speed limits applied. When the 03 facelift came in (it was heavier due to new EU legislated front end upgrades) the same model was restricted to the same speed limits as the bigger vans as it was over 2000kgs.

The introduction of the 1.6hdi a couple of years later then saw a reduction in weight to under 2000kgs which then returned speed limits to 2002 models.

Here's the official limits for you - https://www.gov.uk/speed-limits

It is not done by ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition) It is done by some woman in an office (I will explain)

For those not in the know the UK has a law (not shouted about) called 10+2. What this basically is is a law that allows you to travel at 10% plus two miles per hour above the Posted speed limit signs before getting a ticket.

Examples: 30 mph sign = 35 mph before you can get a ticket

40 mph sign = 46 mph before a ticket

50 mph sign = 57 mph before a ticket

60 mph sign = 68 mph before a ticket

70 mph sign = 79 mph before a ticket

This is to allow for substantial differences in different makes of cars 'speedos'

Lets take 60 mph as our test bench - If you are doing 69 mph (actual) you will trigger the camera and a penalty will be processed. Before this penalty is mailed to you it is checked by an actual person sitting at a desk. Should they see a commercial vehicle or HGV then it will get checked again and if decided at that point you are a commercial of certain weight or above you will get a ticket for being 19 mph over the speed limit (actual limit in most posted 60 areas for commercial trucks and lorries being 50 mph)

Also do not forget if you are driving a van or a car..

For example, Escort vans, Astra Vans, Corsa and Fiesta Vans are all literally cars that have been converted to vans (C.D.V. Car derived van) so the regular speed limits apply.

Vitos for example and transporters have always been vans even though more and more soccer mums are using them.

The Berlingo was originally designed as a van, hence should have the same status as Vitos / SWB Transits etc. However as it was originally derived from the floorplans of the Peugeot 306 / Citroen ZX there is legal grounds to class it as a C.D.V.

There are rumors (I have not yet been able to find actual factual information) that the newer cameras popping up all over are using low power lasers to tell he height of a vehicle in an effort to make the whole process automated.

Two final points: 1) 30 mph above the posted speed limit is an instant disqualification from driving.

2) Only a small percentage of camera 'boxes' actually have cameras in them the rest are just there as a deterrent. (This applies to static cameras only, average speed cameras are all active)

There you go, now you can make an informed decision to go and lose your licence. /emoticons/smile.png

That's all just dandy.

I'm in no hurry. Better to be late in this life than early in the next et cetera

What on earth is a 'soccer mum'?

:confused::confused: what the hell does all that mean lmao, i have a berlingo first on 61 plate can i just keep to the speed signs or what

I did a speed awareness course last year (my 2nd one as you can do them every 3 years) to avoid 3 points and was 3 quid cheaper than the 100 quid fine would have been

Clean licence now

They showed us the pictures of the camera that they had already started using to differentiate height

Has a sensor higher up the post and that is triggered by high vehicles..at that point they were on smaller roads as they are right at the roadside allowing them to be triggered

Those on motorways and dual carriageways are usually on a lot higher posts set away from the road so not sure how they would do that

Green is right that at any given point only about 25% of cameras are loaded and working but they randomly change which ones as i found out years ago..1 that didn't work while driving past at a touch over the limit (48 in a 30) for about 2 years got me at 4am one day as they had changed the ones that were working

Shouldn't have been offered the speed awareness course as it only come in to effect if under 10mph over the limit but i didn't feel i should inform them of that

What on earth is a 'soccer mum'?
Soccer mum - Americanism used to describe a woman whos sole job is running the kids to school, keeping house, running the kids to 'soccer' practice after school etc etc. Preferred mode of transport Vito, Vivaro etc 7 seats plus so they can take their three brats as well as the neighbors. Hence 'Soccer mom wagon'

No worries, if you ever get a ticket for the wrong speed - IE 70 mph in a 'posted' 70 mph (restricted to 60 mph for vans) just go see your Citroen dealer, explain yourself and ask for a letter saying that the Berlingo is based on a Citroen ZX estate and then challenge in court, pain in **** should it ever happen (and doubt it ever will happen) but you cant lose
