Poorly Car.......any Suggestions For Ideal Car For Trad Cleaning

WCF

Help Support WCF:

Please don't by a diesel mondeo mk3

I have one and they are lovley to drive....when they work.

However they very commonly suffer from:

Injector failure (£115+ vat + fitting each for returns)

Diesel pumps £1000+

DMF £1000+

Broken suspension springs

Steering rack failure

Rear subframe bushes

Exhaust rot

For escort diesel without a turbo is your best bet, if you only need 2 seats, get escort van

Thanks for all your advice lads. Looking on autotrader right now. A few of my mates have brought cars from e bay......not sure if thats a gamble or not. Dont really want to spend more than £2500. Less if possible.

I'd rather buy from Ebay than from a dealer, put it that way. Remember that, if the car isn't as advertised, you're not obliged to accept the deal even after you've won it. Buy private is my advice.

Whatever you decide, always ask for the serial number from the current mot pass/fail sheet and use it together with the vehicles registration to do an online history check.

https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history-vehicle

This will list all of the previous mot's(post 2005), detailing pass/fail result, advisory notes and the recorded mileage. This will not only give you some idea of the care the car's had but, will also confirm the authentity of the recorded mileage...it's the easiest thing in the world to swap the clocks over in modern cars and believe me, it's the mileage that ages a car and not, the year of it's build.

Mart.

Cheers Mart..

Has anyone ever had a Peugeot 307 estate.......just seen one on auto trader. Are they reliable and good for the tradtonal window cleaner?

Had Peugeot 307 sw estates through work great boot space have had a front door led flat in boot with seats folded down good fuel return small issues have been turbo works loose under 100 k and can give up injectors and pump after 150 k last injectors cost £1000 to repair do hold values well all the cars have been under 3 year old and the faults are the worst of the cars with total of five cars two only had issues all serviced correctly by peugoet dealers roof bars are dear but sturdy would I buy 1 yep

Should be plenty of 307sw estates about where the service engineers company car for a few years now replaced by Kia Eco estates due to the £30 a year tax band these now being phased out in favour of Astras 1.3 diesel things the tax ain't so cheap on the peugeots they ain't the quickest but at 56 mph give good returns on fuel roughly 50 mpg start booting up to 70+ or town work your down to 39-42 mpg

I finally got the car back today together with a bill for just under 500 quid. So pleased to be back working tomorrow after 4 days off. The car is definitely being traded in......think I am going to plump for a focus estate.

Cheers chaps. I must admit, I am not that knowledgable when it comes to cars. This car is being sold by a dealer.....maybe I should look at private sales.

Is it diesel or petrol? I assume diesel

With the price.

If it is a diesel

I would suggest buying it from a trader with a warranty.

Sadly the newer ish ford diesels (especially from the era your looking at) can sometimes be very problematic, if it is going to be a problem one, ten you'll know within 3 months, so I think its worth paying extra from a dealer with a warranty.

The things to look for on ford diesels (engine wise) are:

Particularly loud diesel knock noise once warmed up.

Rumble type noise while idling

Stutter misfire on idle

White smoke - injector issues

Blue smoke - oil burning, turbo issues likely

Black smoke - not a major problem, egr valve just needs cleaning.

Clutch slip/lack of power (turbo should come in and boost at 1800 until 2,500 rpm)

Other things to check:

All doors line up

Wet boot (lift carpet and check)

Rust on the bottom on the doors (you'll need to get down on your knees and check, rears are worse)

If you need any thing else regarding ford, especially diesels then give me a shout /emoticons/smile.png

Cheers for your advice CNS. This is the focus that I was looking at:

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201240487288926/sort/default/usedcars/maximum-age/up_to_10_years_old/price-to/3000/body-type/estate/maximum-mileage/up_to_80000_miles/model/focus/make/ford/onesearchad/used/page/1/postcode/de557lz/radius/60?logcode=p

I was also looking at this astra:

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/201302235471039/sort/default/usedcars/maximum-mileage/up_to_80000_miles/maximum-age/up_to_10_years_old/body-type/estate/price-to/3000/model/astra/make/vauxhall/onesearchad/used/page/1/postcode/de557lz/radius/60?logcode=p

A few of the lads in the pub advised me to try the auctions for a better priced estate car.....not too sure about that.

Right...off to work in my newly fied car.

Ahh ok so your looking at petrols.

Well the astra sadly is expensive on insurance, even compared to an equal sized engine focus. my friend who has the same astra also says its thirsty on fuel.

The focus looks good and tidy although overpriced even from a dealer. just look out for the rust etc.

Yea, the focus looks lovely n tidy although, dealers do have a knack of making them look that way. It's still an 8 year old car and even if that mileage is correct(I would do an history check as I say), I still wouldn't go above £1800 myself.

Mart.
