Rainwater harvesting - storage

I was considering harvesting rainwater, mainly because we are on a metre and the bills gone up again. So I was wondering from you guys who do this, how much storage do you need to keep going.

I don't intend to use all harvested water but if I could offset the mains usage it would be good. Any assistance greatly appreciated.

it's quite ironic harvesting water as when it rains heavy you can't work. Then when it don't rain for a while you run out of water so can't work /emoticons/biggrin.png

yep spcleaning i want to do that too....as usual...eventually.../emoticons/biggrin.png and ...i wouldnt mind using my waste for the garden...hoping to re do the garden and want to build in the water storage so will watch this post...

Good old polzn bladz

Bit of a waffler though

My squeegees are like his

But I am quicker

I can put one IBC at the front and another at the rear of my property. I can put one at my Mother's property. So thats 3000 litres.

On average I use 300 litres a day. (judging by whats left in the van tank) so that's about two weeks use. During the autumn/winter period we are likely to have rain during a two week period. Like I say I'm not expecting to use only rainwater, but to cut back the use of mains water, and of course the occasional tank top up at customer properties.

Any thoughts?

Yeah definitely worth doing if you have the space for tanks. Might want to check if it safe but I think you can stack the metal frame ones. Also think about filtering any larger sediment out before the rainwater gets to the IBCs.

Also I have 3 x 1000 ltr ibc's & 2 x 210 ltr water butts

I was going to get some more but the wife wont let me /emoticons/biggrin.png

Are you using the water for window cleaning or for the garden? If for window cleaning do the tanks replenish during the winter months enough to keep you supplied?

I got it to harvest rainwater to make pure and very rarely had to use my ro. However since my pure usage has gone up alot I mostly run a ro now.

I plumbed rain water into the toilets in our last place. Why flush away 7l of good water every time you take a ****?

Tried using it for drinking water many years ago. Not great unless boiled.

hey i got to use my creative rating...yes very eco the toilet thing...

er..i the most peaceful person on earth but i lost it on friday....i really wanted to tw at this guy who had just washed his cars...i didnt see him use soap i think he was just swilling them but all the time i was cleaning the front of a house he was just stood there firing the water from his hose onto the road...dont know why or what he was doing but i was getting really annoyed...its been dry for an awful long time here and is continuing all of next week to waste water is a crime...rant over...
