and im in no rush.....I look at longevity of the job so proper rest and recooperation (got arthritis in one hand due to accident as a kid) but

I do love my job and when doc says perhaps you should look at something else I nearly cried (im not working for someone else I thought!)

so now I just take time and get balance right otherwise my hand cramps up.

I don't rush like i used to

Safety goes out the window when you rush

Plus i had a knee injury a couple of years ago

The cap moved slightly to the side (only mm) but enough to cause severe pain as it wasn't sliding up and down the groove it sits in

Took a couple of months for it to bed itself back in so i don't push it anymore

I can still go for a run but have to warm it up now the weather has cooled

i believe that ladderwork is very good for bad knees. i was diagnosed with badly worn knees a decade ago ,while i was still a car mechanic , the bending down under cars wheelarches eventually took its toll

HOWEVER , ive found if i stick to ladderwork only iv no problem whatsoever with my knees , going up n down ladders the knees dont bend much .

now i cant do the downstairs work because that requires bending down . iv got a worker with me who does the downs, if you have bad knees i reccomend you do that

I've been on the ladders all day today and my knee hurts

Not from climbing..i think from carrying

Slipped.a disc 10 years ago also

Wife reckons with all my injuries i should be dog food and glue by now

whats your height davey? im 6ft1 , im thinkin you use Lyte ladders as i do, the spacing of the rungs is bigger than many other makes, it might pay to borrow a ladder with closer rungs cos then your knee bends less .

actually iv jus remembered when i first got my Lytes triple i used 2 sections for a while as my main day to day ladder and it near did me back in . the triples are made heavier than the doubles ,much thicker alloy probably .

i later bought a set of Lytes doubles, amazingly lighter ,altho still trades and same amount of rungs.

on my van i carry 2 sets of the doubles and 1 set of the triples, nobody ever picks the 2 sections of the triples to use in the day to day ,as heavier

One of the driving forces for me to go wfp was my knee, I shattered it a few years back but never went to the hospital/docs, just let it be, took awhile to heal and then forgot about it, in the last few months it has got quite bad, so went to the docs who told me I had shattered the knee after I had some x rays, at the same time one of the two pads holding the knee cap on is detatched and is actually at the front of my knee cap and it has worn down to pretty much bone on bone.

When it is bad even going up stairs is pretty painful, looks like I either need to get it fixed in an op, but told it might take up to 18 months to heal!! or replace the knee cap but that only has a limited life.

Since going wfp the pain has eased off now to a manageable amount, I try and avoid ladders completely now if I can, I have to go up them just using my good leg and its a pain in the ass.

I'm 6'2" but most of my height is my legs

Have to put seat back fully in whatever car or van i drive

couple of years ago i came across an old boy up his ladder painting his house . i was on my ladder too and we chatted a while. he had had both knees replaced . the first 1 went straight forward but the 2nd didnt "bed in " properly. he had to then go in to hospital where his leg was strapped to a machine that pumped his leg up n down

for 48hours non stop!

i asked him,"how did u sleep with that going on ? "

reply "what do you think! "

Sounds like I am same as you daveyboy, I'm 6 foot 2 with most of my height in my legs.

And yeah hoping my knee just hangs on for awhile longer, trying my best not to annoy it.

Here is the x ray of it View attachment 3270

The knee looks nasty.......but is that what I think it is, dangling inbetween your legs.. Looks like we will have to give you a nickname........"the donkey".

Chees Norm, lookign forward ot getting out on the ladders, I have bungalows at present.

Like any trade the tools/methods used are as only as good as the skill of the person using them.

This is exactly right.

I just got a job off a nice house with green upvc, all over, sills and windows, and the windows were streaky, they have had a window cleaner for over a year, he is a trad window cleaner, does this mean trad is bad?
