I manage social media as part of my everyday job.

I am planning to do an article on here at some point about using social media for business. So while I am thinking about it, are their any specific questions you have that I might incorporate answers in to the article/post

manage it? whats that entail?

I work for an Autism charity now and am manager of their information and resource centre but as part of my role I also manage their social media channels. So I am basically in control of content creation, reasurch, planning and posting as well as responding to any comments, feedback etc.

It's actually not as hard or scary as it first seems, once you know how I suppose. One mistake many make is thinking they have to post loads on every single social media channel and that the more the post the better but actually this can do more harm than good.

do u think Twitter could rake in local window work then? im going to attend this ladys twitter course early in 2015 ,with the intention of finding out how twitter works [in targetting locals only ]

You can use most social media to target locals. Its how you use it that's important. What I mean is just directly marketing and selling via social media will maybe bring a bit but it won't bring loads. Social media is a good marketing tool but it has to be viewed as indirect to a certain extent. People need to see the value you bring not just in price but as a whole. Your expertise etc. Their is a general rule 70/20/10

70% should be value you bring to followers. This would be tips relating to your area of work (window cleaning) local events and news etc.

20% should be shared content. Like retweeting others tweets for example. (Those that are relevant to your business) sharing news stories etc relevant to your work.

10% yep the smallest should be promotional posts like offers, endorsements, new jobs maybe or kit which will result in better windows for e.g.

Sometimes this can be 60/20/20 but always the promotional stuff should be smallest.

You have to think of your social media as not just a platform to sell or get custom but a place to provide value, a place to build a reputation in your area of knowledge, expertise etc. This added value, trust and followers seeing you know your stuff and maybe give some helpful tips along the way will result in customers. So as I said its an indirect way of marketing but a good one done well.

You will hear many people telling you all sorts about social media and claiming to be an expert but this is the basics. Dot believe everything you read about posting frequency etc. I read a blog the other day saying people should post about 14 times a day on Facebook for best results due to posts only being visible to most for about 2 hours.

What a load of tosh. Those that believe this will surley turn their followers off fast. The 2 hours bit is somewhat true but posting that much is just a bad idea.

Oh and don't use our social media for this site as an example as I hardly ever use it properly due to the fact I never get time to sit and plan with managing the forum and my day job etc. I keep meaning to though!

a facebook pest you mean?

i must confess i created a fake facebook profile , i worked for british gas and totally respectable city gent , just so that i could bang on about how marvellous this local window firm was/is . pathetic really

Yes sort of.

If you use any social media think about those pages/accounts that interest you those that get your attention and those that you either scroll past or think I must remove these as I am board of seeing their posts etc. you have to have a good balance of content which gives value.

A basic example is this. Someone has pests in their kitchen, they need to get rid, go hunting online and find a few business's to contact two say yes we can do it for x amount let's set a date.

The other says yes we can do it. This may not work but before we do anything else try this technique now maybe the business knows it won't work but already the customer is thinking ok I have a friendly business giving me some free advice and not diving right into the sale.

She tries the free advice but does not work so now she needs one of these three to come and sort it. Who is she going to call? The one who was friendly and gave a little free advice maybe he might have even been more expensive but he has already shown value, expertise etc so really she was already sold and his business would have stood out in her mind more than the others.

Hope that makes sense.

Yeah don't do that you need real ratings and these come from providing that value. You make it so that your the place to go. The service in the know etc then real ratings and the GOLD word of mouth starts to happen. That's what you really want to aim for. People arnt daft these days and will see right through fake reviews etc which in the end will do the opposite you hoped for.

If anyone on here wants some training discs on Twitter and Facebook marketing then let me know and I'll post you em.
Who were these done by? Are they of good quality and good content? So much rubbish being thrown around these days.

I'm a subscriber of Lynda.com so I have hundreds of videos, all good quality in MP4 format. Just watch on your PC

i used to hate the thought of marketing ,its a nancyboy game, thats how me and most other cavemen windies see it. i used to do a month of fliers each spring and that was my lot forget it the rest of the year .

but now i realize more about marketing i see its the only way to get ahead. bit obvious really . and with 3 workers riding on my shirttails i now have to do a little marketin everyday .
