Thought thatcher sold all the council houses? None up in the hills round here.

I had a couple of thousand leaflets for gutter cleaning went to a council estate by mistake and I got more business than I would have privately.Only downside was when canvassing them wasnt as good as normal .I had a few old dears wanting lawns mowing -not my bag but If the house is in good nick decoration wise I reckon a few bob to be made

flats on council estates are pure gold. dont hurry on past them to the houses, park up outside, get out ,lean a while and scan the territory . you will be observed ..... fookin ada wots he doin here?

somebodys leaning on a balcony avin a *** ... "want your windows cleanin chief? "

blocks of flats are usually cleaned shoddily once a year under a council contract but theres many tenants who would love a regular clean but THINK they are out of bounds to a regular window cleaner . not so.

OK so i have set up Facebook and got 5 enquiries. All from social housing.

So far:

2x have not given me their contact details after I gave them a quote by going to their address and having look.

1x I have done but she has not paid after 2 weeks

1x has just cancelled until the new year, before I've even done it for the first time, which should have been tomorrow.

1x has not replied to my Facebook replays after she said 'yes please' via Facebook

So I'm going back to my original instinct that they are just trouble.

I've loads of work on council estates and only the other day I had the best collection I've ever had and this was from one of my estate days , of course you get a the ass holes who run there bill up and disappear but I've had this on private houses also, I prefere the folk on the estates as there more down to earth and have time for a genuine chat, I live in a very posh village and my wife is posh too I'm from a council estate and love them

A window is a window is a window.i am picking up work all the time by NOT PREJUDGING,,,,AND i aint started cleaning yet..nearly have 3 weeks work already...now dont get me wrong i do know that some will drop off BUT without me doing the windows how do i know that ...

Gem, you are not a window cleaner yet! So you have no experience to say a window is a window is a window. Once you have been cleaning for six months you will start to want to develop your business in a direction to suit yourself. That may be on social housing estates or it may be a bit of everything up to and including Mansions. But there will be properties that you will look at and you will say, 'No way am I doing that one' or 'I doubt they will want to pay' so be prepared to prejudge if you want to stay in the business.

A POUND is a POUND is a POUND, so unless the custys pay you for YOUR WORK, you will not last very long.

All i am saying is you cannot know they are not going to pay until they do or dont....may not have cleaned many windows but by god i have canvassed a few thousand in my time...i get to speak to customers more than windies do in my last job lol...i thought sod this i know i can get customers so i will do this myself from start to finish.I know what customers want and need and how some cleaners let them down. Now dont get me wrong i am not stupid enough to think that everyone pays...but i also will never prejudge any customer...WHEN THEY DONT PAY THEN I CAN JUDGE THEM...If they do not pay i will go out get another one...by the way this forum is fantastic and i have had some great advice already for it...if i have upset anybody i do apologise..

How do you possibly Know you have 3 weeks work if you've never cleaned them ? 3 weeks worth is well over 300 houses surely ?

Once you've gained some experience, then you can come on here and comment, and let us know what you have learnt.

Think I am really lucky with where I live, we don't really have "chavs" and the council areas are not rough like some I have seen in the paper/news etc, but not had any issue with them paying, have had a couple say can they pay twice next time and not had a problem with them doing it.

Canvassing....yes some will drop i know that ...
But 3 weeks work is easy 2-300 houses and canvassing that amount takes months and months for the best door knockers by the time you start you'd of lost half the business , more realism and less guessing needed I think m8
