Hi guys,

It's a New Year so I'm looking to add to my current wfp work just wanted some advice on what you think would be the best way. When I first started I bought a round that turned out to be a nightmare so am a little against buying another one. I have picked up a lot of work last year through word of mouth and did quite well with that but it was in drips and drabs. I am the first one to admit that I’m not great at speaking the lingo witch most window cleaners are when it comes to pricing work and running a business I am fine however this is a stumbling block. I was looking about maybe buying an established round however the ones I have seen in my area are a bit above what I was looking to pay. Can anyone advise on what would be the best way to build it up as this is the first time I have really pushed to dramatically increase my work? Any advice would be welcome.

If you want instant work then buying a round is the way to go....however all of that work may not be your ideal customer....so if you want to build a quality round word of mouth is best....but like you say work comes in drips and drabs ... but it can be the most rewarding in the long term. The only work I take on now is the work I really want, I must have turned away 5 jobs last month, simply because the jobs were small jobs and for me aren't worth bothering with, these days I just take on work that is worth doing and as I take on more higher priced jobs I drop jobs at the lower end of the scale...as they say why do 15 jobs a day when you can earn the same or even more doing 10 jobs a day..!!

I've never wanted to buy a round as you are only buying good faith so you don't really own any work so to speak. If work is underpriced, customers mess you about or don't like you for whatever reason then you have wasted a hell of a lot of money. I think It's far better like shiny has mentioned to build a quality round yourself.

Thanks guys yeh I get both of your points and smurf your right like I said buying a round was more hassle than it was worth when I started but it was a way in. I'm getting loads of flyers made so possibly door knocking maybe the way foreword.

No substitute for knocking on doors and asking the question tbh

Work out a price beforehand for an average house in that particular area if you're not good at pricing on the spot

Then add to it if they have a conny or awkward windows

flyers work well if you dole out plenty . regularly . 4 hours once a week every week for a year should build u a decent round, but no less than that . in 4 hours you should use 400+ flyers,so thats 20000 you will need to get printed up

i built my round on flyers mostly and to get a round suitable for 4 workers doled out at least 100000 flyers which i printed myself

I did Melbourne today daveyboy. Just down the road.

I used to work at Johnston Matheys in the 80s. Got quite a lot of work on that industrial estate.

I swear I've seen your van smc. White with blue writing. Maybe it's another smc lol or I'm seeing things.

I've just started out, it was my first week last week:) plenty of door knocking and flyer pushing. First day went really well, the first road i went down I knocked on all doors and spoke to around 20 people in all and out of that picked up three customers;) cleaned them last Saturday and 2 more people came up to me and asked for quote and i won the business also. This was a small cul de sac with around 50 houses. I also canvased other areas throughout the week but no takers:( I guess that the way it goes you can knock on a few doors one day and pick up customers and then knock on even more doors the next day and come away without any? you just got to keep on knock knock knocking. ;-)
