I just want to throw this into the pot.

Forget Solar panels for a moment and lets talk Chimney Sweeping.

For years The Guild of Master Sweeps has been trying to have the law changed so that only sweeps who have attended their courses can work in the uk. This has never happened. The only law governing chimney sweeping is the 1875 Chimney Sweepers Act. Which states that persons under 21 years can't go up chimneys, or words to that effect.

The National Association of Chimney Sweeps will take £1700 off you for a three day course thats means you can hand a certificate to the householder after sweeping. I started sweeping chimneys in 1988 and have never been trained. That said I have not been the cause of a fire, nor have I killed a customer. The NACS has every year stated that 'soon it will be law' to have an accredited sweep but I never see that happening. What the NACS has become is a training body. They record you as a sweep if you attend their training and give your details if asked, but don't otherwise put work your way. They make a big deal about only using a sweep trained by NACS, people are starting to believe that this is the only way to ensure they are going to be safe. I stopped sweeping two years ago because of the cost of this training, that I felt I didn't need. Because, customers were asking for a NACS certificate for insurance purposes etc And window cleaning is cleaner /emoticons/biggrin.png

Steve's training is no less valuable than what the NACS is offering. It is a lot cheaper and if you were the only one claiming to be trained in your area/region and you promoted it in the right way, just maybe this is worth a deeper look.

Like I said before if it was "just" a training course that gave you a bit of good looking paper at the end then great, but its all the rest, having to use their logo so promoting their company, and if you don't you have to return the bit of paper so are no longer qualified even though you did the course?

Its a franchise dressed up as a training course.

Which incidently I have no problem with, but it should be advertised as such.

If I'm being honest, if it was just the course and all the information (which I'm sure is excellent) & the certificate at the end of the day then I'd probably be interested.

It's just everything else that comes with it that's off putting, but as a businessman I can see where Steve is coming from and I wish him all the best with this venture.

Good read.

I think what steve offers shouldn't be taken as a course, but opportunity for more business. If the figures are correct he gave about the guy making £900 in a week, your initial 240 quid is not a massive investment. You know i've been offered to be advertised for much more than that in areas where there is competition, whereas steve apparently won't give work to anyone else in your area. Also think how much people pay for adwords etc

If i needed work desperately i think i would pay for this 'course', but i am happy with what i have atm, also subcontracting seems like pain in the ****

Good luck @Solar Steve

I've really been looking forward to reading this thread all day. Just read the last 3 pages and its all fizzled out  boooooo

Yes your intentions our good about highlighting the risks involved @Solar Steve I would agree to that. As like I said before you have a duty of care & legal responsibility when employing subcontractor cleaners to make sure they are aware of the risks involved and follow your rams for each site they work on. However just curious that the information you have gleamed from others to write your risk assessment and method statement did you actually pay for that information?

Morning everyone. It seems that people think the content of the course is a good idea, but the fact that it is not accredited is now the main issue.
I have spoken to a number of people within the solar industry about how to make this course work. They have said that some courses run for a period of time without accreditation. The way to get it accredited is with a track record.

If I can find a way to get it accredited, I will.

Maybe the course isn't perfect yet. Maybe my pitch wasn't perfect. But I do know that lots of you guys are putting yourself at risk. It's a fact I'm afraid.

Therefore, my intentions are good. I am trying to raise your awareness of the safety aspects while looking for a way to bring a 'standard' to the industry and provide work for people along the way.

Just one more stat. Since January 1st, we have given out prices for the cleaning of 1.2 million solar panels. That's colossal, about 1/3 of all the solar panels in the UK at the moment.

To protect myself, I'd like to know that people carrying out this work for us know what they are doing. I can scrap the certificate bit of everyone prefers.

It's not about money, it's about safety. But equally, why should I give away this info for free?

Also, why train 50 people over the next few years and create 50 competitors for myself? I have to tie in protecting and promoting my brand somewhere along the line.

Put forward sensible suggestions about what you think it needs, accreditation aside, and I will look into it.

Finally, would it appeal more if I went down a franchise route? I'm willing to look into that too.

I will try to keep you amused then

I've really been looking forward to reading this thread all day. Just read the last 3 pages and its all fizzled out  boooooo

Thankyou all for hilarious read..... Sat here with tears running down my face from laughing so much at some of the comments. Beats watching eastenders with the missis !

On serious note tho could be worth doing the whole thing as 2 seperate ideas side by side.

1 as a franchise oppertunity

1 as safety training course

I couldn't be arsed to do solar panels mind as of the awkwardness of most of them . .......
