Split charge relay

Firstly are these DIYable? I am quite confident with most things.....

Second - how much charge do you get out of them? I currently take my battery out of the van to charge. Some days it gets no use others a lot. Will I still have to give it a charge sometimes?

get an auotspark to do one takes 15 mins for them and mine charged me 50 including the relay and i never have to tale battery out of van

I was looking at one of these kits, is it overkill? 4 x the price of the one you have? http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/261437820261
Yes. But it depends what you plan to do in the future.

I replaced my old alternator triggered SCR with this VSR and find a big difference in charging rate (amps) to my leisure battery, even although the wire size from the previous installation was well capable of supporting 20 amps.

The thicker cable supplied with this is what has made all the difference.

I plan to fit a diesel water heater and an electric hose reel sometime so may need to add another battery, hence the reason for the 'massive' upgrade.

Yes they are quite easy to do. I bought one of these

depends how big your battery is for how much work you get from it. I have fitted one of these to keep an eye on the battery. Cheap and simple

We have the Brocott equivalent of these VSR on both of the other vans and they work fine.

But, if you do a limited mileage, then you will have to boost the battery charge. I do it every second evening, but will do it every evening if the battery has been 'hammered' that day. Its easy for me as my van is parked on the driveway. I don't take the battery out to charge it as I have a dedicated connector and just plug the charger into the system. It takes maybe a minute to unroll the extension lead and plug the charger in and switch it on.

My son in law does more miles with his van so doesn't have to charge his battery as often. He lives about 9 miles from here and then may do another 9 miles during the course of working his route. He also does a bit more private (non business) mileage so this all helps. (They go out to dinner to his folks once a month and clean their windows at the same time. That's a round trip of about 40 miles.) He should boost charge his battery once a week, but doesn't. He has been caught out with a flat leisure battery on several occasions. Whilst the VSR will give you enough power to run your pump with the van engine running, leaving your van in the street isn't recommended. So for him, it cost him a days work and a wasted journey.

The more expensive VSR in the first quote box is bidirectional. So when I boost charge the leisure battery the charger also tops up the van battery as well automatically. I have added an on off switch to the earth lead of the VSR so I can control if I want the VSR to work or not. Its not necessary but I've done it anyway. The one jimmy referred to in his post isn't.

What Spruce above said mate /emoticons/smile.png Those little voltometers are great. Really cheap from china if you dont mind waiting a week or two for arrival. You can also leave them on all day as they use next to no power, being LED.

On my previous Trolley it stays on wired into the flow control. On my Heavy duty Trolley I put its own on/off switch

Just ordered both from a company in the uk should be here Monday [emoji106]
