I like being my own boss so I can boss myself about /emoticons/biggrin.pngAlso I have no hassle/grief from employees and have so much more freedom to do what I like when I like without the added stress.

As far as burn out is concerned for me that is never going to happen as I do very little as it is and my wife will vouch for that

I still can't get my head around how come you are not compulsory vat registered yet @boarcity with the amount of ppl that work for you?

£82,000 (the ‘threshold’) in a 12 month period but you must be over that threshold by now surely?
well below

I might have to sack a new custyTurned up and she was nice on facebook

Said money was hidden in a box for me as she may be out

She was in

Didn't answer door

Went out walking straight past me on the ladder without saying a word and the tenner in the Box was all 20 pences and 50s

Can't be arsed with that
That is so funny at least she paid ya

It's all legal tender but I bet her piggy bank is a bit lighter now unlike @daveyboy1 pocket /emoticons/biggrin.png

yrs ago in a former business i was vat registered and i can tell you there is nothing to be gained by it.

the only small benefit of registering for VAT ,is that you can claim all the vat you have paid on capital items since you started up i.e. tools, van as long as you still own them at time of registering .

you would have to put your vat number on every receipt, plus be clear when giving a price that you tell them its plus vat /or vat included. id think if you were mainly commercial ,at least 30% commercial , going vat registered would be the way to go. every quarter you have to send in your vat returns to the tax man. generally speaking you will be paying him tho if you buy something new you will be claiming the vat back in the next return .

i know but say i charge mrs black 13.00 pounds what way do i charge wen im vat registered

i didnt think u charged vat on cleaning services

you can tell mrs black it 2 ways . mrs blacks price is either 13 plus vat = 15.60 or her price is 15.60 inc vat . either way you will send off the 2.60 to the vat man.

im no expert but the main advantage of being vat registered is to businesses that buy a lot of products to sell on . if they are not registered theyd be really losing out on each purchase transaction paying vat .

however i cant see an advantage for a labour only business [as windies are] to be registered

Lets say you spend £20'000 on a new van and system on those items you will have paid £4000 in VAT. That is £4000 that your suppliers didn't get they just passed it on to Her Majesty.

Now you have your van and all your gear you are set to go window cleaning, you dont need to buy anything else for thee year so therefore you are not paying anymore VAT for the year.

Now you are turning over more than £82'000 so now you have to pay VAT, VAT on £82'000 would be £16'400 but you can claim back the £4000 you spent on your set up so you only pay £12'400 in VAT

Also you are LEGALLY obliged to give every single customer a VAT receipt once you are registered.

And it is not £82'000 in the tax year, it is £82'000 in any twelve month rolling period.

January to November you do £2k per month - that's £22'000 then you land a big contract to sub for Solar Steve in December worth £61'000 to you, Now we have £83'000 in a twelve month period, now you have to pay VAT. It does not matter that £6K was earned in Jan-Feb-March, the previous tax year, the tax year has feck all to do with it, it is any 12 month rolling period, they got you by the short an curlys!

over the yrs iv read about folk who have fiddled the vat and been caught , a recent case was in my local area , a hotel pretended theyd had the place painted and they were claiming the vat back on the big decorating bill [ was a false bill theyd printed up ]

they were caught out because they mispelt the town in cornwall on the forged bill

lol clowns

but reallly u be surprised in a year how much vat u rack up and hm gives u it every quarter i think the thing is if ur going to go over the threshold of 82000 u might as well bust balls and really go all out and bild it bigger to make it worth while

im thinking long term. take a long hard look, youre 42 not 22 , you wont be able to keep up the slog for long mate .
oh i know they missed windows and they moaned [that an english trait, everyone here moans, ignore] but theyre already Trained. Useful. All you need to do is get em back on track, praps swap it about the partime lad out with the other lad - praps the lone wolf will do better with a helper/mate , instead of him feeling hes on his lonesome.

leaving you to get a helper of your own ? or maybe ur happy to slog on Your own, bet you arent
I am 57 and I would not tolerate these 2. Tbh they would have been gone sooner than Green. You are taking the same path as me, i will never employ anyone ever again. I cope ok at 57 so don't worry about 42+......

Nah Peter, the staffing days are done for me, seriously. It will be a long long time before I take on anyone else if ever.
It simply puts me in a position where my books are closed, if a new custie want's in now I can either tell them to wait till there's one drop off or see if there's any dead weight that can be cut so I can add on the new custie instead.

Here's the kicker, havn't taken a break in over 12 months because been too busy making sure the new boys know exactly what they're doing. By getting rid of them I have calculated I will save so much on paying employee liability, second van expenses, uniforms and so on that I have already started looking to book a week in Santorini seeing old friends and a week fly fishing in Scotland this year for a start.

Might not sound awfully exotic but I am already fortunate enough to have been very well traveled so and anything more than a week and I get a bit bored! /emoticons/smile.png So these will do for starters.
Santorini is breathtaking. Ticks the exotic box as far as I am concerned.....
