MrBump

Hey, I've been using this forum for a while now as it is a great source of knowledge and friendliness and so for that I say a big thank you to you all. I thought I would finally bite the bullet and sign up and share with you the experiences of my first full day of work...

So I turn up to my first job at 9am, we are walking around and having a chat and the customer asks me to remove a clump of grass from the gutter. No problem I said, I'll do you a favour, it will only take a minute as it was on a bungalow.

However to get down the side alley that I was in I had to go through a garage and through a gate on the other side of the garden. My ladder is all the way strapped to the inside of my van outside the front of the bungalow. Right next to me is a customers step ladder, an old metal framed one with wooden steps. May as well use this one I thought. Went up, got the clump of grass out, but to check the rest of the gutters were clean, for some reason I went to the top step. Gutters were all clear. As I turned around and walked back down facing forwards, the second step from the top melted away into nothing.

I came crashing down face first. It was so sudden and unexpected, my only reaction was to move the trowel in my hand away from my chest, the other arm fell on to the edge of a concrete block. Went to the hospital. Broken elbow. Out of work for 6-8 weeks. Moral of the story - never be lazy where your safety is concerned. I feel like a right plonker!

give you a winner for that great story...but ever so informative in a safety way...

I too have been caught out on some dodgy step ladders before today..

but the worst was borrowing an already up decorators ladder as of course my feet didnt like the sudden differing size of gap...ouch..poor shins...

hi and welcome to the forum and hope you get back into the swing of things soon.../emoticons/biggrin.png

of course we all know your middle name is frank...

where is frank feck up.....Im missing him...

Cheers Tuffers. I thought the name would be fitting /emoticons/wink.png Not a great start indeed... but actually when I properly started doing the odd job a few months back I crashed my new van and had to postpone a few custys then too. Was quite funny hearing the reactions when I have had to postpone them yet again, but instead of the van being broken, its the operator!

Cheers cheapncheerful, better get those old shinpads out when on yer ladder next time /emoticons/wink.png

Hi & welcome @MrBump...Do hope you make a speedy recovery

Was a steep learning curve for sure that could have ended a lot worse than it did so count yourself very lucky indeed.

Thanks Smurf. Fortunately I canvassed bungalows and wfp can be done almost just one-handed so it won't be keeping me entirely out of the game for the full recovery period thats for sure! /emoticons/wink.png

Haha we sure can Frank! Was that you I saw in the a&e with your beans above your sausage? Think I should swap my logo for that MrBump /emoticons/biggrin.png

Welcome fella

Sorry to hear about your fall

Lesson learnt though

"NEVER USE STEPLADDERS" horrible dangerous things

Cheers daveyboy1. Stepladders aren't the greatest, especially when the wood has turned to mulch! I sure won't be making that mistake again

Hi mr bump , welcome to the party bud . Sorry you had to meet frank so early in your career , thought he would of given you a couple of weeks grace before an appearance

Cheers Natty1972, boarcity and jake. Hope my stupidity/laziness/misfortune has got everyone checking their ladders over again!

Welcome @MrBump, sorry to hear about your fall! But positives - valuable lesson learnt as you said, and you have some time whilst you're resting up to crack on with some marketing /emoticons/smile.png Website, social media accounts and some canvassing when you're able to!

Best of luck!

Hi bump, just read your story.... I had similar bad start, after about a month, I broke a foot bone. Had to cancel a few jobs, and resume after two months with a very achy foot.

Don't let it beat you though (sounds like you're not letting it!)

I'm new to it this year and dislike ladders a lot. I'm starting to turn down ladder jobs as I'm picking up wfp window jobs, leave the gutter repairs to experienced roofer types
