Deadbaiting is effective @kev but to me nothing beats lures and flies

I evenn have some home made lures and fliess in my kit..I'll fish some out the shed tomorrow and take a pic

I've said for a while a pike fly rod is the next rod i'll buy dave i've been dying to get into it for ages. I've got a 7 weight but it's not big enough for big pike flys. It's just finding the time to go and do it to. But yeah poppers across the surface have you seen the bow waves they make?! It looks unbelievable them coming from 10 plus feet away to nail a popper. My heart was pounding just watching videos on youtube lol

I have caught several pike when hust flinging a new popper in the water and reeling in to see how it works over the years

They love it

Especially now when they are actively feeding up for winter

Plus they love a bit of tailwalking now before they get too fat

Nothing like one aggressively snatching your lure from the surface and then tailwalking round a bit

The heart goes thump a bit then i can tell you

Freelining is good as long as you keep the line resting on your fingertip to feel any takes..plus i use braid to get more in touch with the bait/lure

Never free lined for pike always been worried about deep hooking them free lining

Use braid for lure fishing but never used it for ledgering

It's healthy apart from the chips which i made with olive oil in the oven so not that bad

As long as you are using a bite alarm it should'nt be a problem. We have done it that way for years. I usually do 10 seconds then strike if the fish is definitely running
