Not sure if this has been done before but I thought it might be interesting and maybe offer some inspiration to the newbies.

I've always been envious of people who knew exactly what career path they wanted to take. My sister knew she wanted to be a nurse from a young age and did well at school, went on to further education and then trained to be a nurse.

I never had a clue what I wanted to do. I left school with bad GCSE results and flitted from job to job. I eventually ended up working in a warehouse. Seven years later I was still there. Thirty years old, married, four kids and a shite warehouse job. My mrs worked and we got by but I was on **** money and working all the hours under the sun so the kids didn't go without.

Everything about my life was good other than work. I hated it but couldn't see a way out. I was up at 4 or 5am five or six days a week and when I was home I was knackered and stressed out. The managers were **** heads and so were most of my colleagues.

In summer 2014 I spoke to the Mrs about us getting a second car. Just something cheap so I didn't have to rely on lifts or the bus for work. We saved a few quid and in September last year I started looking for a little run around.

After looking at cars online for a while, i started browsing used vans. I found a little Vauxhall combo just up the road from me that I liked the look of so I thought why not. A van is handier to have than a car, especially as I was the only one going to be using it.

I went and had a look and the chap selling it was a window cleaner. I bought the van and went on my way.

A day or two later I remembered the guy selling the van saying he was a window cleaner and something about it got me interested and I thought "I could do that" so I had a look online and started researching the business. Within a few days I'd ordered all my trad gear and was practicing non-stop. After a couple of weeks doing friends and family members houses I got my first proper job and it's grown from there. I spent another six months working in the warehouse while I was building a little round and doing the windows part time and in March this year I went full time on the windows and haven't looked back since.

I'm not 100% sure but after speaking to another windie on here I think the guy I bought the van off might be on here too. I'll see if he recognises the red combo with the Arsenal tax disc holder G-)

Let's hear the rest of your story's.

Cheers mate. I like hearing people's stories too. There's lots of success stories on here

Mine is very much a like yours. Currently part time in a call centre. Part time on windows. About 6 weeks in now and just hit the 50 customer mark which I'm very happy with.

Hoping once I get that to 120 to go full time.

Fingers crossed

Other than the 4 kids.

Just 1 so far

If you're not already doing it, join all the local Facebook selling/buying/business groups and advertise on them daily. I got loads of work from them in the early days.

I have been doing this.

Would say all in all picked up about 10 jobs from it. Some being one off and others regular. It's nice easy free advertising which is always good.

Great story mate, warehouse work is the pitts, been there done that.

My story is much less inspirational than yours. I bought a ladder for a painting job and was getting grief off the mrs to sell it. So I needed a reason to keep it and decided to add gutter work to my list of handyman services. Not even thought of window cleaning as it had never appealed to me. **** work, **** money....so I thought. But then I started to look into it and thought that regular window cleaning for my handyman customers would be a great way to stay in touch with them, leading to more work, and more leads. First day out on a freezing cold, but sunny day, and I loved it. Working outside instead of cooped up inside a customers house was just like a dream. Shame I was only walking away with 12quid though. So I needed to build a little round. The little round got bigger and bigger, its gotten to the point where I am struggling to fit handyman work in. Most jobs I get offered now are much less appealing than a day on the windows, but I do get the odd offer that I can't turn down, especially painting jobs. Most people hate painting including myself. But when you are getting paid for it its a different ball game- the money is good if you quote right, but breathing in fumes all day is no way to live a life when you can be outside in the sun.

8 years ago i was drifting jobless[and homeless ,holed up in a shack of a shed ] after a disastrous marriage/career burnout . one day a windie drove past me squeaky clean and boy he was smiling,a crackin smile -laughing too [at what i will never know]

iv looked for him loads a times since but he dont exist -was he smiling his last day in the job?? ,i will never know

but i thought, Hmmm hes nice and smiley -- i SO want a part of that

within a day id got a ladder etc and was out doorknocking, but NOBODY nobody wanted to know. eVERYBODY just said NO point blank

i felt like sh///t . what can i do NOW ?- lets walk the beach instead ID WALKED it a hundred times deep in thought and often go dig up the beer id buried in the shingle the previous week and sit n drink it .

on the way to the beach i saw a house at the roadside and thought, just this last one,giv it a shot -if they too say no i will forget the whole daft idea

But fate stepped in and the kind lady she said YES ! and that was me i was up n running!

@TolishAPurd

That's cool how you decided to do it as an add on service and then it took off. I totally agree about being outside on a cold, sunny day. It's been a while since we've had one of those though.

The thing that worried me the most when I first started out was falling off my ladder and badly hurting myself. Not because it would hurt but because i couldn't stand the thought of having to go back to the sort of job I hated. I've got my trolley now though so at least I don't have to worry about that any more.

boar are you still doing that ladies windows

every time you go to clean her windows bet you have little thought to yourself

Its been done before this topic, but i like writing/hearing these tales of despair lol

Me, i left school not knowing what to do and ended up in a warehouse for 9 years, then 5 years as a delivery driver, 3 kids, i decided to do a degree, did about two years and realised i hated it/didnt want to work in an office. had usual, house, gf, usual go to work watch tv, sleep, repeat routine.

Anyway 2 years ago the cheating ***** left me and i lost the house, ended up in debt, got ****** over proper. Was lonely, depressed living with my mother. One day decided **** this and quit job and started valeting cars...It didnt work out i couldnt get the work in quick enough. I ended up taking a part time job and felt depressed again, hopeless and a failure...Anyway i ended up meeting my current gf feeling a lot better i started back with the business idea and went into windows.

Built up a few customers now and just quit my part time job, im also still doing the car valeting and carpet cleaning.

So im still at the start of my journey toward being a millionaire.

Sounds like you were at rock bottom. I'm pleased you got back on your feet. I don't think many people would have come back from that so well done.

I know just the van you mean

I had heard it was still being used for window cleaning.

Fair play to you for making a go of it and good luck to you.

I worked as a supervisor in a factory for 21 years. Got rid of the missis & usual story for blokes. Lost house got into debt& lived in a caravan for 2 years. It was lovely in the summer but freezing in the winter so moved in with a mate who rented me a room. He had his own cleaning business so being on shift work I used to help him window clean. Sat down one day & thought I could do this. No mortgage & kids had gone so didn't need to do shift work no more. Got a note off doc for depression for 4 weeks (good actor) & got a friend to canvass for me while I spent every day delivering leaflets. He got about £500 worth & I got a few from the leaflets & the rest is history.

I thought you were on here. Me and @daveyboy1 were speaking about it recently. Cheers for the van!
No problem,it's a great van.

I meet Dave on Tuesday and he said you had my old van.

I'm not on here all the time but if you ever need any help or advice feel free to ask.

I started working on the windows on saturdays and school holidays for my mates dad back in 1990 ..1991 i left school and started my apprenticeship

Still did it while doing my apprenticeship panel beating

Almost finished the 2 years and garage went into liquidation

Joined the army for 3 years but would still help him when i was about

When i left there was no work about so i decided sod this I'll get some customers of my own and that was that from1995 - 2000 i built upy own round in london which i sold when my wife was pregnant and i moved from london

Sold it due to finding work subbing off a local company for a very good rate and not having to travel to london every day and worry about collecting etc

Did that for 8 years and then he sold up

Did a few jobs since then but kept a few loyal customers that i had for years and did at weekends

Last summer i finally had enough and decided I'm working for myself and that's it..had enough working for others and never doing it again

Never been so happy in life since i sold the london round

But i have always had some window cleaning going on ever since 1990

i did them a few years till she moved . she Really wanted me to clean the windows at her new place a few miles away, "move with her" was the phrase she used. this was out of my way but i thought wot the heck shes so important i MUST do it. few weeks later i go look for her new place she had described it to a T, but i couldnt find it

and she never rang me

so that was that
