Water butts

Would it be ok to put this water butt outside all year round as it would make like a lot easier for me as I thinking I could connect another water butt I'm a little worried about the freezing weather I.e. Would they freeze and wouldn't be able to fill my water butts.

Surely it'll have to be extremely cold to freeze up? You could always insulate them with either blankets or loft insulation if it does get that cold

They are unlikely to freeze solid, however, you are likely to experience some freezing. I live in south east Essex and most winters I experience some freezing problems if I leave my barrels in the garden or car with water in. If I need to fill them the night before I usually stand them in my kitchen overnight if it is forecast to drop below zero.

If you can build a small cabin around them you can insulate them with bubble wrap or something. That's what I've done. Here's a pic:

There's a 400ltr upright tank in there plus trolley and all filter equipment

Thanks for the info fellas And photo Mark the ro can stay in the coal shed so should be enough insulation I also have some large insulation sheets to put round the ro in extreme cold weather if need be, it's just where I wanted to put the water butts i personally it think would be more pleasing to the eye as I already have three large sheds used to breed birds and a temporary shed housing my daughters house hold item while she is in temporary accommodation, just don't want any more storage areas or sheds as soon as my daughter husband and grandson get on the property ladder it will free my space in my sheds again.

Yes it was custom made by myself and a friend about 8/9 yrs ago. I didn't want it all on display in the garden as we enjoy sitting out there in the nice whether and we didn't fancy sitting out there staring at it all. There was the insulation question as well

Hello Mark,

Im thinking of getting a static 400 litre upright tank the same as yours the measurements would work out perfect for me to fit in my coal shed do you have a shut off valve/ball **** ahow do they work really want to sort one out as soon as possible nearly had my waterbutt overflow earlier.

I need to do something with my water butts

I made a box to house the ro and inline tds sensors to keep it waterproof but need to do something with the butts

I am toying with the idea of running a hose down the garden behind the shrubs and screwing the box on the inside of my shedView attachment 8061

Then moving the bbq and box in that left hand bit in front of the shed to contain the butts so it is not visible

Hi Den, you need this I believe:

AUTO SHUT OFF KIT for AQUARIUM, RO FILTER, WINDOW CLEANING

It shuts off both pure and waste water when your tank is full.

I used to have one but it wore out as ball valves do after a while and I never replaced it as I got to know roughly when my tank was full. So I just fitted a 8mm overflow pipe about 25mm from the top of the tank and run it into a barrel sited where I can see it. As soon as it starts to fill I know the tank is full.

Hi Dave. Don't know how cold it gets where you are in winter, but if you site your RO and buts in your shed at the end of your garden, consider using a removable length of hose on a reel to connect to a tap at the back of your house. On really cold nights when you're not producing water you'll want to bring your hose in to stop it freezing.

My 'cabin' is right next to my kitchen but even here the 1mtr of hose connecting my outside tap to the RO in the cabin freezes in winter if I don't disconnect it when not in use. I have a 60w frost protection tube heater in the cabin under my RO to stop it freezing in winter. It's wired to breaker in case of water getting into it.

I have two 250l water butts linked at the bottom so they fill up at the same time and on a stop ****.

Not had freezing problems in three years.

I was OK for my first three years. The fourth year I started having problems with freezing so I bought an l5 ecotemp heater. That has kept me going on numerous occasions in freezing weather.
