What's the plan? Full on commercial?
Noooo heavens forbid. I dont see the point in commercial window cleaning as they make you wait soo long for payments.

I also do a lot of industrial deep cleaning amd that is all cheque on completion so no messing about waiting /emoticons/smile.png)

I don't really understand why folk make a big fuss about waiting for payment from commercial jobs... I could understand on a fledgling round, where cash flow might be a touch tight but with an established business it shouldn't be a problem...

I disagree with the entire 30 days nonsense in our business.

It came about when suppliers would give retailers 30 days to pay so they had time to sell product to get the money in.

We supply a service not a product they cant sell on our service and don't profit from it in a financial sense so they don't need 30 days.

If the jobs done they can pay. Simple process.

It's not about weather or not ine can wait for the payment it's about WHY SHOULD one wait for a payment?

It is cause in modern times WE the provider have come to lead them to believe that this is acceptible practice.

Regardless of size of round tight control of cash flow is critical and I chose to control mine by not offering terms.

I'm with high @High\-tower on this. I do lots of commercial work. I'm happy to invoice and then wait. It all comes in in the end. Just sit back and wait. They always pay up.

i sense you hate the repetition. the sheer grind of it . but if you make sure that the regular round is EXACTLY the type of work you relish ,then it becomes almost a joy to grind it out. you need to think carefully what it is that you enjoy, target it hard and turn everything else away . in my own case ,ALL that iv ever enjoyd doing is cleaning windows on smallish council house style homes or flats and doing plenty of them. my lads and i can churn thru a big list of this stuff every day without breaking into a big stressy sweat .

After a Xmas holiday rethink ,in January i dropped all my 3 storey work ,best part of a £grand a month that was, then jus over a week ago i dropped all the double bay homes/mansions/mini mansions - this amounted to a similar £amount a month-jus so i can focus totally on WHAT I WANT . i felt elated once the decision had been made - Now and only now ,my rounds totally focussed on doing/finding the sort of work i really like doing and iv a silly smile on my face every day -the cat that got the cream!

I like this boar, im sure we all have work we really enjoy and a lot more that we just endure, theres a lot to be said for building a round thats just to your liking, a stress free round full of good payers and the type of houses you like must be a joy.

Council houses and flats would be last on my list of enjoyable jobs, i prefer working on bigger houses and doing less total jobs in a day even if there a bit spread apart, but each to their own.

Council houses and endless 3 bed terraces are a joy to work on

2 up 1 down front and back plus a patio door

Minutes to clean but add up to a very good days work

I like the big jobs too (detached big house £30 and upwards)

The bit in between of odd size and style houses that take long enough to travel between but not big enough to charge what you could earn elsewhere are a pain

I would rather just do the others

I am trying to do more of the other services i offer and gradually adding more services to my business

Still growing the window cleaning though as the work keeps finding me so i am only leafletting and canvassing specific areas which will compact my round and being quite choosy about what i take on as a new customer

it took me till this year [8 yrs in ] to take stock . up till then id took on allsorts of window cleaning work with little thought to it ,long as the money was ok,i was in there. but along with the good id accrued a percentage of truly hard slog work which kept slowing us down-you cant fight a battle every day constantly without the men rebelling -mutiny!

. i was explaining it to my missus who doesnt understand whats diffrent from doing one job over another and why im dropping a wodge of the work. she senses idleness . how i explained it was imagine im a gardener and this 1 house i go to every month Always has new big weeds growing everytime i arrive . but along the same road is another house its garden just needs a trim and i never see any weeds . i like this house a lot . missus says just get your head down and arrse up and pull the weeds you lazy sod !

I still prefer commercials. Give me a school or old peoples home that takes 5 or 6 hours. Get there at 6. Crack it out by 12. Have lunch then bugger about on houses on the way home.

My missus doesn't understand when i do a quote and then say i don't want the job

Work is work in her opinion

Or when someone takes the pi$$ with paying and i drop them

She says "they pay eventually what's the problem"

The problem is i don't work like that

I have less than £300 outstanding in payments now which is how i like it

I don't harrass people but i have a load of good payers on my books and if anyone forgets they get a weekly reminder which usually results in an apologetic reply and prompt payment

Not because i chase people but because that is how they have been conditioned over time from having me as their windie

Thankfully my mrs is the opposite. I think it depends what sort of work they do.

My wife (a hairdresser) is always turning away work because she doesn't like he look of the customer, can't be bothered to drive across town for a £15 job, doesn't want to get up early on a Sunday because she'd rather a lay-in than earn £25 for a cut and blow dry.

To some it would probably sound lazy but that's what this sort of work is about, picking and choosing what you want to do.
