Hi all,

My names Dean and I'm just starting out doing trad only at the moment. Got my essential gear all sorted (I think), but wanted to ask a question.....

I know for hard to reach windows I'll need an extendable pole, but does this also mean then that I need a "zero degree" or straight squeegee so that I can squeegee properly from a distance or a more horizontal angle? Hope that makes sense.

Any advice would be great fully received guys?on that or anything else really!

So far I have bucket, boab, unger tbar and squeegee, 3 metre pole, ladders (obviously), scrims and sill cloths etc. Anything I've missed?

Cheers all,

Dean /emoticons/smile.png

Hi and welcome!

Apart from water and soap, I'd only say you miss some scrapers from that list. A small one for the boab and a larger one for bigger jobs is what i prefer. Remember spare blades.

Unger sells an angle adaptor for their poles which is a good tool. You use it with your regular squeegee for awkward angles.

Hi Nudel and thanks for your quick reply.

Oh yeah I've got a scraper and blades too....the small one for the boab! I'd forgotten I'd bought that lol.

I like the sound of the unger adapter too which means I won't have to buy an additional squeegee.....gonna Google now!

Thanks again!! /emoticons/smile.png

The best pole is a harris 5m decorators pole from b&q £15

It needs altering to take the unger adjustable crank but it is perfect and all I use (although i use an excelerator on it nowadays )

I will find wagga's vid how to alter it..it is easy

Thanks for that Daveyboy! Really useful that is, I'll certainly be having a bash at that modification. Nice one!! /emoticons/smile.png

Hi Dean welcome to the forum. This forum is a great place for windys starting out, so much info on here.

I'd recommend going to Toolstation and getting your telescopic pole. They do a Moerman (good make) 6m pole for I think it was about £40, plus they do moerman squeegees, t bars and channel rubber all at a decent price. I'd also say if your starting out, get a 6 inch squeegee sorted. I use mine everyday for little windows and for wiping soap from sills.

BnQ are good like daveyboy said. I get Squeegee Off in there and I buy my new applicator mops from bnq. They're dirt cheap and just as good as unger or anyone else.

Also to save dosh, I go to charity shops and buy a large towel, then cut it up into squares and use it for sill cloths. For scrim I use wilko's own glass cleaning cloth - its better than scrim and cheaper. They are £3 for a large square.

I only use the wilko microfibres. .£3 for a 60x80cm one and they are a lot better than ettore etc (except for the 3 metre square ones i got from a local supplier Turners over 8 years ago and still good as new with daily use and about 3 times as thick)

Squeegee off for £4 from b&q is a bargain..i mix about a 10th of a bottle with 1 squirt of asda premium citrus washing up liquid (as good as platinum but 70p a bottle) for extra slip in a 5l container and use that to keep my spray bottle topped up as i spray the glass and then mop and squeegee and that will last a week easily

I use the harris pole as a 5m pole for £15 is a no brainer..just make sure you wd40 the pole occasionally and it will last forever

Get a second one and some pro gutter tools which fit the standard end supplied while you're there if you want to clear gutters

Asda do a box of 1kilo of microfibre for £7 which i counted 35 cloths that aren't huge but make excellent sill cloths

.look in the motoring section..can use i per job and still have some left for tomorrow

Wow thanks guys, loads of help and advice there. Right then so tomorrow will consist of a trip to wilkos,b&q,asda and Halfords to sort my roof bars out!!

Cheers all, I'll certainly be in touch once I get cracking for more advice. Gonna start canvassing my area once my business cards arrive and take it from there! /emoticons/smile.png

Daveyboy put me onto the Harris pole, even though I don't use it for a squeegee I have used on soffits to mop and wipe also use with a small mop under the finials on Connie roofs when there as beien a stubborn stain so defo worth converting a Harris pole.
