I would take the housing off and clean the filter out, then sit the filter and housing in a bleach concentrate. Then thoroughly rinse with water. I would then wrap some ducktape or some material around the housing to prevent the light getting in.

If that cures the problem then its sunlight and algae.

What I would find interesting is that the first filter housing is a prefilter housing so will have traces of chlorine in it from the water. That's only removed from the water in the second carbon block prefilter.

No he hasn't but it would appear that sunlight is getting to the front of the housing from the rear doors. So the possibility exists that he works with the rear doors open.

Unfortunately we didn't get a photo of the housing taken from the side door.
