Help please!

This what I've got...

Purchased a wave cyber 4040 RO from Mr Gardiner and a Spectrum SRO-4040 ultra low pressure from others.

3 Pre filters from vyair

RO membrane:

In - Inserted the membrane, 1/2" water feed with blanking plug and the brine seal of membrane on the same side.

Out - 1/2" ports to include permeate (middle) going to DI and drain (off centre)

Dual inline tds showing 85 post RO

post di showing 0

Tap tds 72

Water pressure 50psi

No booster used

Q1. I think I've fitted the RO correctly, mind you the membrane has been wrapped in black tape. Should this be left on OR removed?

Q2. Why is post RO tds showing 85, I'm looking for something a lot lower than this surely? Even though I don't have a booster.

Information much appreciated.

A higher TDS on your product line - sounds like your waste to me? Take a picture it will be easier to understand. Some membranes have what looks like tape wrapped round them - I've never fitted a spectrum so can't advise, all the membranes I've dealt with have had a solid resin type finish to them?

It sounds as if the shaft located in the premate end is not inserted properly is your waste is mixing with premate. The Spectrum Ultra Low Membrane is rated at 100 Psi compared to a low pressure Axeon at 80 psi

Surely if the premate shaft wasn't located properly you wouldn't get the housing to close fully? I've attached a picture of my set up - feed in at the bottom, waste is red at the top which goes to the gate valve to control pressure, blue top is pure which goes to DI. Apologies for the dull picture the light is **** in the cellar!

You would as there is about 2 inch gap between membrane and end cap on the plastic housing. The FRP housing I think there is very little.

Make sure the end caps on the FRP are well greased otherwise when you go to change the membrane you will not get it off.

Just checked and I can confirm the membrane is fitting snugly at both ends and well lubed.

See attached images is my set up.

Just a small point, The waste pipe coming from the RO should be a red one and not blue. Will change that.

Hope this helps

I would grab a water sample from the pure outlet and test the tds with your handheld tds meter just in case your inline unit is telling porkies.

I've have that same tds meter and it is very accurate.

Edit.

Scrap that as I believe @Alex Gardiner has sussed the problem. /emoticons/wink.png

Hi Mark H

Very neat looking setup.

I think that I may have spotted the issue! (if I'm reading the photos correctly).

On the 3rd photo it shows the inlet connection - from what I can see it looks like you have connected this inlet to the central port. If I have viewed this correctly and it is connected to the central port then this is the wrong port - it should be connected to the offset side port on the inlet side. The central port is an optional permeate outlet (pure water) and should not be used for the inlet water.

Thanks spruce, I

will try that.

Alex,

I will also take out the blanking plug (currently off central) on the inlet side and swap it over so that the blanking plug is screwed to the central port.

Much appreciated chaps.

I'll report back tomorrow.

This will explain exactly why you were having this issue - basically the water that the unit was outputting was just the input water that was flowing straight through the centre of the membrane with maybe a little preservative added. Fortunately mis-plumbing it this way should not have caused any damage to the unit.
