Friend Laid Off

A friend of mine has just been laid off from his job in a factory. The factory is notorious for this. Anyway he gave me a call today and asked if I had any work going so I said give me a call tomorrow and I'll have a think about it. I've just started out so I am no where near being able to offer him a full time job.

I think though this is an opportunity to do something. He is an experienced window cleaner and as they say luck is when opportunity meets preperation. I was thinking of offering him something commission based, I don't think he would go canvassing for me but I can always ask him to do that and see how he reacts.

Does anyone have any ideas how I can make this opportunity pay as I can't seem to think of a way to take advantage of this offer. Maybe just appologise and move on?

might be worth thinkin about, but i know its hard if the work isnt there! but could try and get him to go canvassing with you and say you get £5 for each one you sign up or something like that?? then when there is a lot you both could work and pay him for some hours work

I have customers, yes customers asking me for jobs all the time. Same with friends/family, Most have no experience though. I apologies and turn them down. Im not at a stage where im willing or want to take anyone on though.

If I were you I would only offer commision based pay, as you said you have just started out so money will be tight.

Thanks mate, I will broach the subject with him tomorrow but he strikes me as the quiet type who won't thrive in that sort of environment.

I might just tell him to be ready for Monday morning and just both do a little bit and then go canvassing all day and at the end of it hand him a little bit of cash that makes him think 'hang on this is more than I was earning in that factory.' I haven't got much on next week so I could spend a lot of time canvassing and if at the end of the week he didn't like it I've had 80 man hours spent building my business so it can only be a good thing!

well he has said he is a experienced windy so if you need him give him a shout but if you can manage on ya own then work on ya own .

im all for helping friends and family but when it comes to my livelyhood i dont want no one messing up my chances

im getting to the stage now where people are stopping me and asking for my services now i dont want anyone else buggering it up for me .

I agree with every opinion that has been shared, I worked with this guy years ago on commercials and know he can cut the mustard.

I'm not in a position where I could say yeah heres a full time job but I'm also finding that I'm spending that much time working on my business that I'm finding it hard to work in my business. For example today I had a meeting with an accountant and the business area manager from HSBC. This went on all morning almost and ended with the area manager leaving an offer on the table that left what I asked for in its shadow but there is a little more risk and a lot more reward involved.

Yeah that's what I'm thinking. I've got a bit of spare cash saved up from the one off work I've done last week so I'm thinking about investing this in advertising. Getting the van sign written and getting some leaflets done. If I can get this guy in to give me a push canvassing and doing first cleans then I should be cooking on gas

Yeah, I think if I can pull it off in the right way this could be a good little thing for me. He doesn't drive though so I will be hinting at him to get a licence after a couple of weeks before I employed him

I know, the problem I've got is I've got this guy who can clean but not drive. I've got a guy pestering me who can drive but little cleaning experience. I've got me doing everything and not enough work to do anything about it.

So for me I think my plan of action will be to get this lad who can clean but not drive and get him to help me build up the business. At that point I am going to tell him if he gets a licence then he can have a full time job. The other guy I can't do nothing for at the moment so I'll leave it that way and see if I can find an opportunity to get him involved further down the line. To be honest though I've got phone numbers for loads of lads that can drive and clean and if I had the work I'd give them a call anyway.
