Been in this business for near on 50 years, and I reckoned I'd heard it all, at least 10 times over;). Went to do a quote on a 'large' house this evening (custies description).

Very secluded. High double wrought iron gates with gold painted spikes on top. Long winding drive with repro cast iron Victorian lamp posts. House surrounded with god knows how many acres of grounds, all immaculate and with discreet, tasteful lighting. Don't know how many bedrooms but there were nine dormer windows in the roof. 15 windows of various sizes in the front, 13 in the right hand side and back and then a wing with an upper floor lounge with 8 large picture windows in one side, then an indoor swimming pool with floor to ceiling glass on two sides, the pool was about 50ft x 30ft. 2 huge rooflights over the pool, 10 curved glass sections in each rooflight. 10 more large windows on the left side and 2 over a flat roof that had pitched tiled sections around it so it couldn't be accessed without climbing up the tiles to get on the flat bit - only way to do them was by climbing out from inside.

I worked out my price per 8 week visit.

Before I gave the man the price he said he wanted the extension glass roof (3 6x3 panes and then 3 more beyond them) and all the exterior lights included (25 in all). revised my price, gave him my usual sales pitch describing WFP (previous guy was trad!!) and told him what it would cost.

He nearly had a heart attack!!!

HOW MUCH WOULD YOU CHARGE?

I'll tell you later what I quoted, and what his previous windy was charging./emoticons/biggrin.png

And no, I didn't get the job!!

I've had two extremes in the last year , priced a big house for £110 per clean , was told I was too cheap ......mmmmm didn't get it . And £6 was told I was too expensive.....wtf, didn't get that one either....

I'll say £110

I had one a few years ago phoned me as there windows had not turned up and they were having a party, wanted inside and out done. I quoted and charged £180, took me 5 hours. Wife said she was really happy as I did loads the others didn't. They got me to do their offices too. When I went back to do outsides for £80 (about 2 hours work) they jogged me on as I was too expensive. They had a £300k Porsche, some people just think they are entitled to make good money but no one else is.

I worked it out at £140 for an 8 weekly clean. About 3 - 31/2 hours - the same rate we would have generated on our more usual 3-4 bed semis/detacheds. That was before he said he wanted the glass roof and all the exterior lights included. I revised it upwards to £170, which was probably too cheap bearing in mind the roof wasn't easy to access and the lamps were spread out all over the drive and grounds.

He was speechless! When he got his breath back he told me his previous cleaner (who had been doing this and their previous house for about 25 years) was charging £45 and taking about 5 hours to do the job!!! He said he'd expected we would be "Maybe 10 - 20% dearer"! Did a quick calculation and pointed out to him that on those figures, taking into account expenses he was paying his previous man less than the National Minimum Wage.

He didn't seem to think there was anything wrong with that!!

Told me he would think about it - I'm not holding my breath, I don't think I would take it on even if he wanted to accept my quote, I can see endless trouble down the line as each time we did it he would be thinking how we were turning him over!

The job (and more importantly the client) sounds like it'd be never-ending hassle.

You're pricing sounds perfectly reasonable.

3½ hours window cleaning (I'd call it 4 including all the setup etc)

4 x £40 = £160

Glass roof plus extra lights £50

£210 total.

Why did the other windy stop doing em . Did he tell you .
The client said the other windy was getting old and wanted to cut down on his workload. Bet he didn't get much of a 'golden handshake' in recognition of umpteen years of being exploited!!

I'd guess that this custy was testing you with his £45 story. Its ludicrous and i bet its made up. For big stately homes like the one you are speaking of - it's a whole days work.

8 hours a day x £30 an hour = £240 and I'd make sure it did take all day.

If they can afford to live somewhere like that then £240 is pocket change.

That's how i would have priced it.
