Leisure Battery

Been covered many times but - as a champion of Halfords batteries thought I would give update on my latest pitch. My system is in bits at the moment due to some adjustments needed - I wanted to upgrade my 70Ah leisure Battery as it wasn't keeping up with the demands I was expecting. I decided to take my battery in to store for them to check the 'output' with the 'concern' that it wasn't performing and was giving intermittent results. I was told that they no longer carry out the capacitance test on leisure batteries as it's been proven not to work. Bearing in mind I handed over a fully charged battery with very vague reasoning for its return I was offered a brand new exchange battery & no voltage test was carried out (it was fully charged @13.6v). I don't know if this is a company wide opinion but having heard mixed reviews that warranty claims were being refused with other brands, as our industry doesn't suit the characteristics of a 'leisure battery', I am quite pleased with the outcome in my instance as I was allowed to upgrade to a 115Ah battery for a few quid more.

Still a thumbs up to Halfords from me [emoji106]

Never had a issue with exchanges in the past , Tell them it ain't holding a charge and you go caravaning fairly frequently on a few sites that don't have eleccy hook ups so the battery gets a fair amount of use thats if they ask for full explanation .

But I normally just say it ain't holding charge and they provide an exchange or refund without issue .

Thanks for that.

I find this comment extremely interesting. This capacitance test is a scientific calculation based on a small draw reading. I could never fathom out how they could judge a batteries remaining volume with a test such as this.

In the old days we would fully charge a starter battery and then do a high current discharge test until the battery went 'flat'. It wasn't a test that took a few minutes. Leisure batteries would need a much smaller current test and would take much longer.

The replacement battery must have been on charge as a leisure battery will be fully charged at 12.7/12.8v after resting for 4 hours.

.

I bought a 115 ah from them the other day for £95. 30% off at the moment!
how often would you need to charge that up ? i use £10 car batteries from the scrappy but need charging every night and im getting older and lazier

If you want a leisure battery to last, it should be charged every night. The more its fully charged, the longer it will last

That's what kind of test I'm used to Spruce - 'CAP' testing over a 24 hour period with a continuous Amp draw depending on the battery rating. I had the displeasure of running the battery bay in our hangar for 2 years - 75% of the batteries used to fail!

I have recently had a SCR installed not sure how good it will be as I don't do a great deal of mileage a day except on 4 days a month which would only be around 20 miles each day,

i dont do anything longer than 10 miles and only x4 a month so never tried src

not sure myself how good it's going to perform for the sake of £30 quid thought I would give it a punt.

Output and concern you have put 'apostrophe's' before and after, why? I find it hilarious!

Great post though 'AGlassAct' lol

Even this is not 100% accurate with leisure batteries. Just a slight change in battery temperature over a couple of days can give different readings using the same battery. But the way you describe is a pretty good indicator of the remaining capacity compared to it original spec. For us wfp that's good enough. If the leisure battery that used to last 3 days is barely making it through the day when fully charged, then we don't need to be rocket scientists to work out that the solution is a new battery.

so no real advantage over my scrappy batteries
It's what you can get to work for you. There is a company near us that sells part worn tyres. I would only fit new to my car even although I do limited mileage, but there must be people out there who buy and fit them.

I understand how you feel. For me its like a baby's dummy - its nice to have. (It must be because it shuts them up.)

We had a leisure battery fail during a big job we used to have out of area. We were able to run the van's engine and finish the job. So that vsr paid for itself that day.

That's the first and only time we have ever had to run the engine. But its nice to have in case we get caught again.

I don't know much about leisure batteries and learning something new every day but all the time they are getting a little top up can't a bad thing my battery was reading 12.5 and after installing the scr I checked and got a 14.1 so know it's working ok every little helps.

Its this simple. Once a leisure battery is used, even one house, the quicker its charged to full capacity, the longer it will last.

Posted after a massive session on the lash. I thankyou /emoticons/wink.png

Hey guys been reading comments got me thinking should I be setup running a leisure battery also ?? At present I have mine wired to my van battery ( sparky wired it of course)

This has to be your call. We found we couldn't take this route on my son's Peugeot Partner van or son in law's Transit Connect. We just don't do the traveling time required to charge the battery back up again. We found our van batteries were flat after 4 days.

A number of years ago another cleaner in the south quite successfully ran his pump off the battery of his Citroen Berlingo - the same van.

At the most it takes us 10 minutes drive to get home. If you are in London then driving 5 or 6 miles in stop start traffic could take an hour. The van's battery would benefit from that longer journey time as it will be getting a longer charge.
