Van racking fixing

Morning all,

Buying my first van on Wednesday and it’s plywood lined.

Can I screw straight into the panelled plywood when installing racking? Do people use any special screws or just standard wood screws?

I think I can see what thickness ply has been used as there is an exposed bit where the wheels are. Or is there a common thickness ply installers use?

thanks

Word of caution, be very careful where you put what screws. We had to take the ply off my sliding door to adjust the mechanism and my son used the wrong screw in the wrong place and went right through the panel. ?

Yep. A dealer had plylining fitted to 350 Berlingo vans for a large order when I was in the motor trade. The fitter used the wrong length of screws and punctured 350 fuel tanks. The plylining company who fitted the plylining declared themselves bankrupt when the scale of their mistake became known.

These are the type of screws plyliners used to use.

They are available in different thread lengths.

Most van ply lining kits are around 6mm and offer no structural integrity with regards to fixings such as racking. Nearly all timber and metal racking systems require and utilise floor mounts such as blocks and steel banding or strap bracketry which fixes into the vehicles steel body via the means of nuts bolts or quality self tapping screws similar to how I built and secured my own pole tubes

Hi, it’s more the location of where to drill without going through the other side. Is it where all the other screw holes are that I drill into?
thanks
If in doubt unscrew the plywood and see where you are screwing into. It's too late to look once you have gone through the skin!!!

Like I said mate, don't bother drilling. All van internals have ribbing or structural strengthening which stands out. If you are not confident doing it go to a mechanic or body specialist.

It really is a simple job

I ended up spending £600 on racking at the above because of the time I saved trying to make racks. I can remove them when I get a new van or put them in my garage. Just too busy now, even commercial work is coming on board at 3 times my daily rate or more. ?

I bought a metal van rack from Vanstyle 4 years ago when I bought my new van.

Because I’m impatient, I used small self tappers and screwed it to the plywood and then thought I’d sought it out properly at a later date.

That rack hasn’t moved 1 millimetre since, so cobblers to it, I’m leaving it as it is ???‍?
