Common working practices doesn't make it ok as complacence can kill ppl if they don’t use ladders correctly even when footed by another person. If a ladder starts to slide away either at the top or bottom of the ladder the person footing the ladder will not be able to stop it.

This is a very good example  http://www.liveleak....=13e_1191083013

its not complacency, that is a safe way of using a ladder, being footed or wedged against a wall/tree/car will stop the ladder moving. just because you wouldnt do it doesnt make it unsafe

as for that video, the guy wasnt footing the ladder, he had his hands in his pockets and one foot on a rung, so it doesnt apply to this at all

From experiance just looking at the angle can tell without seeing the height of the ladder is which by the way is set at 1 in 4 /emoticons/wink.png

Unlike these numpties /emoticons/biggrin.png

Wouldnt it be safer to put the ladder above the window, if the ladder if long enough, I would pass on that job as its not safe to do with ladder.

Some poeple bang on how its safer to "foot" the ladder, it doesnt make it safer, from experiance, how are you gonna stop the ladder from slipping??

Exactly my point,... why risk it just for just a few quid beats me /emoticons/wink.png

lol, when a ladder is footed properly it doesnt slip, full stop! thats why you foot it.

i work on my own so i foot with the car, i dont think my 12 stone plus the weight of the ladder is going to move my 1 and a half tonne car, do you?

i have been at the top and the bottom of similar ladder setups literally hundreds of times, so from 'real' experience it is safe, and someone footing properly does stop any slippage and is therefore also safe, how can you say footing a ladder doesnt work, IT DOES!!!!

I'm not on about what you have said as far as footing a ladder using other means but there is also an added risk to the ladder itself as can buckle the rungs and stiles if ppl use them more on acute angles as ladders are not designed to be used like that.

As far as the vid is concerned they were both in the wrong as the lad setting the ladder was way past 1 in 4 rule so the lad footing the ladder could not hold the ladder stiles even if he wanted to safely.

Your life is in thire hands.....

lol, if that guy was footing the ladder properly it wouldnt have slipped, 1 in 4 or not.

in fact the 1 in 4 rule is for ladders unfooted, if you go further than 1 in 4 then it requires footing, end of

Must go now as have some gutter clearing work booked in,...lets hope I don't fall off and kill myself today....

yep I was today thanks... makes the ladder very stable but doesn't stop me falling off the ladder though so I'm still very careful how I set it up and what I'm doing /emoticons/wink.png

here are some pics of one of the jobs I did earlier today showing the best way how to set a ladder on slippery decking. Also as you mentioned using a wall to foot the ladder, type of tools used and a couple of pics how bad the guttering were.

Hope this helps any newbies thinking of staring gutter clearing by hand. By the way I did use a guttervac on the front of that one but still had to use a ladder to unblock the downspout and remove very large cement fillets out by hand.

Keep safe chaps...

Just taken one to show you,...those blue ankalad bars fold up to each side of the ladder like so /emoticons/wink.png

Another job to add to me list as will have to clean the roof of me van now.... /emoticons/biggrin.png

cheers i like the look of them , in the second picture where they are seperate can you walk up them like steps

Never mind just keep an eye out for another one then.

I would recommend a microlite to anyone as is the only ladder stand-off I know of rated class 1 and can be used on roof tiles too.

a couple of weeks ago someone put one of those microlite stays on e-bay i was watching it but forgot to put a bid on

it did not sell for 99p gutted i e-mailed the bloke and he decided to sell it

lol, theres nothing wrong with that pic, the ladder is footed......cue H&S warfare, wheres my hard hat!
dont matter if it is footed or not, the strain on the ladder at that angle could weaken it alot and when you are up there at a diffrent house could collapse on you!
