For those who have got them, how hot do they actually get?

The reason why I ask is the I got a 40 watt unit and it hardly gets warm to the touch. The instructions warned that these get very hot. Mine doesn't

Thanks

I have 3 different sizes, 60w 120w & 180w

They are not designed to heat a room like most heaters, they give off a steady heat. They all say warn the get hot as this is there way of getting out of being sued if you burn yourself on them!

My 60w kept the ice off the windscreen of the van, the 120w is by my pumps and kept them from freezing and where it was in the van the outside of the van was frost free.

Just fitted the 180w in the shed where my room is and that didn't have frost on the roof this morning but everything else was!

Thanks RC,

I appreciate your reply.

I thought a 40 watt would be big enough to keep a 1.2m x 1.m x 250mm sealed box I have my 4040 r/o warm enough. I have it on a frost thermostat and the inside temperature is 8 degrees. Its not really cold yet. I've turned the frost stat up to 12 degrees but the temperature hasn't climbed at all.

The tube heater is warm to the touch, but not hot.

I saw the video you posted, and I gathered from that that you were concerned about the heat and were going to put a metal deflector plate around to protect your pump and hose.

If it was mine I wouldn't bother. The fitting instructions are very clear about mounting this at least 200 mm under a shelf due to heat - joke.

I have a 45w heater in a ply box, insulated on all walls, except one. Then stuffed excess insulation on the sides/top of tank. At -2 out side, the inside box temp was +6. I checked it about 30 sec/50 secs later.

Im buying one today.just gonna rest it across the froor in the van and leave it on all night. .

By all accounts it cant catch fire to things.its like a radiator just not as hot...

35 quid in b and q...

The thing is with chip board and no insulation, you may aswell be trying to heat your whole garden with it lol

Get some of that radiator silver stuff that goes on the wall, and some cheap loft insulation.

Most of them have a thermal cut out as well. What size are you going for?

Have you a toolstation near you? The 180w are only 24.62 in there, or buy on line for free next day delivery

The 240w is just over £27

Well thanks to you guys and especially to RCProperty. I ordered a 120watt tube heater from Toolstation (didn't have room for the bigger one) and fitted it tonight. This heater get too hot to touch. Within 1/2 an hour the temperature in the box was raised to 10 degrees where I want it and the frost stat had switched off. This is the result I was looking for. That 40 watt tube heater had kept the unit at 5 degrees for the last week and as far as I know, the frost stat never turned off.

Don't think I'll bother with insulating the box just yet. /emoticons/wink.png

I am going to look at the cupboard my transfer pump sits in. I have a 40 watt light bulb in there that I can switch on that keeps the pump from freezing - will probably fit that instead.

Sounds good, no problem. Glad to help!
