Doesn’t mean anything H; if you don’t include some cost and then look at your living expenses – sole traders should really include all living expenses as well, any surplus money is disposable income and this money is your true net profit.

1 – What was the initial cost to set up the business?

2 – How much does each customers cost you to service?

3 – What is the gross profit after cost & living expenses for every 4 weeks?

4 - When is the break even point reached / what is the profit margin as a percentage

5 – Next years target increase, as a percentage.

Try and better your previous years figures H, that’s what a lot of businesses do; there is a limit to what a sole trader can do, but when you can reach that point - you can then decide if you want to continue to grow you business even further.

Its possible to do it within 2 years, or just take your time and do it over a longer period.

The trouble with discussing earnings on forums is that there are always people out there researching the possibility of starting up themselves. Figures quoted out of context can give the wrong impression.

On "that other forum" there were some total plonkers who lived in a fantasy world and gave out stuff that never could have been true. Its better just to not say anything in my opinion.

This happens all the time; the start up cost and then operating cost need to be included. Total hours worked, including the work hours you don’t get paid for need to be accounted for. Subtracting your holiday pay, sick pay or pension contributions, from the days you do work, is mentioned less often.

The turnover in cash for a business need to be a lot higher, just to be on par with a wage; one reality if you advised a window cleaner to charge more, often done on the forums, you will likely encounter some resistance.

It’s a shame because net profit margins can go up dramatically, as soon as you start to lower the percentage figure for expenses. (Page 36 Winning at Window Cleaning, gives an example). This single figure alone is great fun to play with, and can become a challenge to reduce this and see your profits take off.

To be honest Smurf I think Richards already posted half the book, although not word for word around the forum at some time or another and I've read the book myself, an interesting read actually.
"how to make money from mugs" acccording to some of the prices you reckon you charge Smurf I'd say you're in the same game so pot and kettle spring to mind!
