Hello, I just wanted to introduce myself, I am Michael after working at dead end jobs since I have been 16, I have decided at 25 that my best bet would to be starting my own window cleaning buisness. I have experience in this field as my dad used to be a window cleaner when I was younger and I use to help him out. Now I have only been up and running for around a week but I have already have had 3 happy customers, and got more customers for during the week. I have delivered around 1000 leaflets and this has gave me 3 new customers and I have been using Facebook to advertise. Now I am not sure how to go about canvassing, I currently don't have a car so have been carrying my ladder with me to do jobs. I am a bit nervous on knocking on doors as I don't want to be bothering people while they are doing something. And not sure how to sell my services to people, I live around the Bedfordshire area. I use the traditional method and not scared of heights but dont have a tall enough ladder for 3 storeys so not sure how to advertise and try and get customers that I can use ladders on as don't want to put anyone off.  I hope this makes sense to everyone.

Thank you!

My work really took off when someone mentioned you could put a FREE add in Thomson Local and Yell. I thought it was bull**it and left it for a couple years, but it did stick in my head so checked it out one day and booom! The rest is history as they say. Good luck, mate.

I have always found a bit of all advertising works in it's own way. Just get your name in as many places as possible. Leaflets get a decent enough return but often comes in over a period of time. Facebook and other sites yell etc are good. But canvassing is the quickest and best by far. I just use.

Hi I'm a local window cleaner I have been working at some of your neighbours properties today (even if I havent) would you like a quote for having your Windows cleaned aswell. If yes great if no I just say thanks for your time and give them a leaflet in case they need it in future. Have often had people who said no on door contact me later.

Good luck

Hi mate, welcome to the forum.  I started my second window cleaning business from scratch and 5 years on it's the best thing i ever did. Just stick at it.  When I knocked doors, i always used the non pressure approach along the lines of 'just started window cleaning, can i leave you my card'.  99% would take it that way and ones that showed interest usually turned out to be decent regular customers.

One piece of advice i would give is not to do anything risky.  Always check your ladders footing and if in doubt, don;t do it or use a pole.  I had 2 falls in my first 18 months and none since.  When you're keen to please customers it's easy to take unnecessary risks!

I just want to say a big thank you to everyone for all your help! I'm ready for this journey and I'm going to stick at it through the highs and lows as I can see that the end product is worth it!

Nervous about canvassing, most of us are, but we do it, and that is how you get customers mostly to start with...on the doorstep knocking.

Reason we do not like it is you are going to get lots more no,s from people than yesses for your service. And we all do not like being told no, I do not want you (human nature) which is why we never asked out as many girls as we should of!!!!.

Keep with it mate, and good luck
