Ankalad - Extending Long Extension Ladder

Has anyone tried extending a long ladder while the ladder is being supported solely by the Ankalad? Or do you always extend the ladder conventionally and then extend the Ankalad after the ladder is in place?

I quite often do that on gutter cleans as I'm a bit of a short ass. DON'T go as high as where the legs joing the ladder.

I've got to extend my 24' ladder almost all the way out, so I guess I'd better extend it the normal way and then set up the Ankalad after the extended ladder's in place.
