I was told that canvassing is the way to go for window cleaning, but is it also better for gardeners and handymen as well? I mean better than putting flyers through letter boxes?

If flyers are A5 sized and black and white, but nice enough, are these sufficient?

Well the gypsies go knocking doors for power washing, roof cleaning, tarmac painting, gutters etc and they seem to do well..

The better your flyer the better chance of someone taking 2 mins to look at it.

Thing with flyers is you waiting and hoping, face to face you get an answer there and then.

Window cleaning is a proactive service whereas handyman is a reactive service (usually). This means a window cleaner is someone that you look for generally whereas a handyman is someone you look for when something goes wrong (again, usually). With this in mind, there's not much point in knocking doors telling people about your service unless they have a problem that needs fixing at the time. They're unlikely to remember you, in which case you're better off taking some flyers. A combination of both will build up a good relationship with potential customers.

I'm fairly new to the trade and have tried leafleting and door knocking. I've spent about 12 hours leafleting and not got a single call and I've spent about 6 - 8 hours knocking on doors and got 6 good customers, 2 one off cleans, 1 gutter job and I've quoted probably 10 additional houses too!

Iain is correct. A combination of canvassing and flyering usually works the best for me. As i am going from house to house anyway i tend to personalise my flyers to every house by quoting for the front of the house to clean. suppose could also quote for gardening work also. Very little added time to do this and i have found it increases response rate.

We go dark about 4:30 during the winter here, so over that time I card new areas, then when the light night comes in I go back over those areas that look promising. That way I focus my canvassing on street, I know I stand good chance of getting a few.
